Default Homemade stands. Trash or treasure?

A guy I know is giving up bowhunting and has given me some stuff. Included are some treestands. I don't need them.
They are older and homemade. The welding is high quality and the stands are very sturdy. I actually have a couple from the same builder.

Part of me says to take them to the metal recycle. Another part says that they have lots of life and someone would be happy to use them. They would need new foam on the seat and maybe new cabling for peace of mind. New paint would be nice.

What say you guys? Scrap yard or sell?

Once they're properly hung, they're plenty sturdy.
The stands need a bit of refurbishing. They'd also need ratchet straps. I would never consider hiding an issue from someone in order to make a few bucks.

Problem is, I'm a bit of a worrier and don't want to be responsible for some guy who doesn't hang 'em right. It's not like I'm a big manufacturer with how-to videos, step by step instruction manuals and lawyers writing up disclaimers.

Sell them as “scrap metal” or “for parts only” but list them under hunting supplies.

Find a new to hunting person, give it to them to help reduce the cost, maybe mentor them too.

I'd say give them away, if you plan to sell them keep in mind what a new hang on actually costs. Homemade stands are typically as heavy as a bank vault as well.

Nothing wrong with those. I'd have no problem hanging them in a tree and hunting from them. They look solid. Sell them.

I built 2 based upon a design from chrono Manufacturing (the Ongaro boys),

I beefed them up quite a bit, and added extra features to mine. Would I sell them to a stranger? Never. Liability is too high.

One of the trickiest parts of getting on and off a tree stand is the lack of a good D Handle or two anchored ABOVE the stand, to grab hold of when alighting on and off the stand.

No one sells such a beast, and you have to use a long 3/8 in lag bolt to weld a D of Rebar on. Then it is easy to have three points of contact when moving your foot on or off the last step.

My steps are also custom welded very wide 1/2" square bar stock, wrapped in grip tape, and wide enough for a winter boot, welded to long 3/8 inch lag bolts. Commercial pegs are a joke when you are facing - 20 and climb in wide foot wear to keep warm. Again, no one sells such a beast.

So take your chances. If you have nothing to lose, just go bankrupt after you get the Judgment for a serious injury from the user of the Stand that blames you for the fall.

Or just scrap them and sleep better at night.
