New power head for my auger?
Do you know where a guy can buy a new power head for a auger. Mine seized on my and the cost on parts is about $170(thats assuming the parts and still available), and am I thinkning that it might be cheaper to just replace the motor.

Princess auto
Try Princess Auto. When I was there last week they had which appeared to be the same power head as my buddy has on his Eskimo ice auger there. Was advertised under another name for fenceposts but looked almost identical. Found it on line click the link below. It may work at half the price of a new one with a few tweaks?

I will check this out but i think that it is for a dirt auger and I believe that the direction for rotation is oppisite that of an ice auger. But thanks I will looking to it for sure.

Should be same direction for rotation. Lower gear ratio will mean slower rpm.
I have and use an older General power head with a Tecumseh engine. c/w a 6" post hole bit, I modified an old manual type 8" Moraboran for ice, only prob is soft Ice in spring, it will screw into the Ice if I let it. When it does, I have to back it out with a pipe wrench.

Can I ask how did you seize it?
And maybe your chain saw motor will work then you will keep it alive lol

There wasn't enough lube (oil) in the oil gas mix is my guess.
The way I see it is either the oil settled to bottom of the jerry can or this stuff ( Opti-2)is junk, and where was enough lubrication for a 24:1 engine. As when I poured the gas to strip it down the gas was clearer then I thought it should be.
I treat my small motors well to get alot of life from them and I am none to happy about this, the motors well cared for, draining, run dry in the summer and sea foam in the jerry can, and what I thought was good oil.
When I get a chance I am going to check the jerry can for settling. Hadn't used it in 2 years.
Live and learn I guess.

Opti is good stuff
I wouldn't bet on the opti being junk. Many of us use it and have for many years without any issues. Search the board and we all run all kinds of engines with it. maybe something else was going on.

Good point.
Plus, everything works until it quits. Some things just quit.

Opti is a good oil brand.
Does your engine call for a 24-1 oil mixture?.
Too much oil is worse than too little and causes overheating.
And dont listen to manufacturers claims about stabilizing gas for 2 years.
Use a fresh mix of high grade #1 gas with a full synthetic oil at the start of the season. And read the label on the 2 stroke oil some have a fuel stabilizer mixed in.

More often than not a 2 stroke that seized did so because of a lean air fuel mixture. Many times caused by gummed up carb restricting gas flow.

i was having problems with my dirt bike a few years back(although it didnt seize) and drained the gas out to find about 2 cups of water in the tank. i checked my gas can to find it had water in it as well. I called around and talk to a few people who said that gas stations that dont get a ton of traffic to keep the premium gas fresh can often have water in it. after that i always filled up at busier gas stations and had no trouble. It makes sense that the last gas station out to the lake may not have a lot of premium buying customers and it may be sitting there from last year! a motor that sits with water for a couple weeks even would have plenty of time to seize up. just a thought.

Have you tried taking off the cylinder head to see why it seized?

I pulled it apart and you can see where the piston rings have melted and where it has scored the cylinder wall.

Let me be honest here for a second . If that motor had lasted you quite a long time and was something you enjoyed using , Id say get the engine rebuilt and use the same auger . Then its essentially a brand new auger . Just my opinion . Augers for the most part are junk , all mass made in china like everything else . So it costs you 200 bucks , keep her ticking like a fine tuned clock and it will last you another 10 , 15 , 20 years . Pretty good investment as far as I see fit .

Sometimes it is mostly smeared aluminium on the cylinder wall. You might want to try washing it off the cylinder wall with muriatic acid and then replace just the piston if you are looking for a cheaper fix.

Just to clear the air about the whole "made in china" thing. My Husqvarna was made in Sweden........ I agree in this case, rebuild her!

as said above the Southland does fit on the Eskimo 51.
I have bought a New Eskimo Quantam the other day and have put the auger on the Southland which i have already, for digging post holes in the ground. THe 43 CC has more than enough power to spin it. the rotaion is correct.
The actual Eskimo motor is in storage for me for later.
