Question for those who are experienced with bedding. I purchased a used Sako L61R in 25-06 last fall and didn’t really get into going through it till recently. When I purchased it I knew it wasn’t the original stock. But it seemed alright minus a small dent and a few scratches as well as a pulled out swivel hole. The barrel and rifling looked good and the price was fair so I bought it figuring I could make the repairs this spring. However when I removed the barrel from the stock I can now see it has a previous bedding job that’s sub par. I’m not sure what compound was used but it seems like almost a fast set epoxy of some sort. Should I totally remove all of the previous bedding right down to bare wood or if I can get it roughed up enough can I just apply a new bedding compound over it?
Most epoxy type compounds will come out quite easily with heat. Take a heat gun and heat up the bedding material and then use a screw driver and other tools to remove the softened compound. Much easier than sanding or carving.
To remove epoxy with ease heat epoxy with heat gun used for paint stripping . Use on low setting , and no need to get too hot .Don't want to damage stock finish . As epoxy gets warm it can easily be removed .
