Default Tapping old guns for scope mounts

There used to be milling blocks you could buy that clamped to your action in a vis and set holes to drill so you could tap and mount your scopes seems like everyone looks at my funny when I ask about these at the gun shops somebody else out there must remember them?

Should ask proline in Inglewood. They did some work on a buddies gun for a swivel tap mount. They might know what your talking about.

Brownells sells a Williams and a Forster. Type in "scope mount receiver drill and tap fixture" into Uncle Google, he knows all.

Default seen a few classics ruined

One that comes to mind is the ZKK 601 223 I looked at at last September Thorncliff show. guess because Brno scope mounts can be expensive and sometimes difficult to find the previous owner decided to drill and tap for weaver bases. Suspected the holes weren't even close to proper alignment so I passed on what could have been a great accurate rifle. Like many things some stuff should be left for qualified gunsmiths with the proper tools and knowledge. Because there is a "jig" available doesnt mean it will be done right.

Not to mention tapping a receiver that was never tapped at factory already reduces the value if the rifle is collectable. Kind of like putting a Pachmeyer recoil pad on a classic double.

Many years ago a gentleman brought me a Mauser 98 to drill and tap. Apparently he couldn't get it right himself , had drilled 8 holes in the front receiver ring and of course nothing was in line or in centre. He ruined the reciever
