Default .22LR for Red Fox?

I have a Ruger semi auto .22LR. No scope.
I wanted to try it out for some Red Fox to see if I can get them to come to a few calls or a bait pile.
Reds are a 15 pound animal at max. If a .22LR is legal for coon which go up to 35 lbs around here, should be good for Reds. no??
I don't want fur damage.
what do you all think?

Default 22LR for Red Fox

If you can hit them with it you should have no problem. Good Luck!

It sure is nice to have a scope during those times of low light, but like I said, if you can put a bullet in the right spot you'll do fine. They should be really pretty this time of year. Early morning is a great time to get one of them. Good luck!

I always get a chuckle out of a response like this.

I reckon if you hit them in the guts you WILL have a problem. Like with just about any hunting situation I would say it is possible to kill fox with a .22 LR but are there better rounds.

A .17 rimfire or a .22 mag. will have just enough more "shocking power" (if I can use that term without getting into a separate debate) to make them better rounds for fox.

But as said above the .22 will work under many circumstances. And having a quick follow up shot with the semi-auto is also a good thing.

I'm not worried about the Fox getting wounded by the .22LR. Using those new hyper velocity rounds in 40 grains is pretty good medicine for them.
The .22 can take down coon which are heavier than a Red Fox.
I wouldn't attempt a hunt on them if the .22 was bolt action...semi auto and the next round is automatically chambered and ready to go.

.22 mag is better no doubt.

the red fox is not easy to call in....the few ive brought in on coyote stands were well outside of .22LR range.

with the right bullet you can avoid too much damage yet still shoot a cartridge with better range.

a 17HMR with 20gr hornady XTP might work good.....the 17gr Vmax makes a mess...trust me

Default soft target

Fox are easy to kill with just about anything you happen to be holding at the time. The Brits kill lots of them with airguns/pellet rifles. For called ones you might be best with a shotgun and bird shot........Harold

Default shotgun is fine.

I've killed full grown coyotes with anything from 7 1/2 shot to #4 even one with a 3" .410 For coyote most recommend #2 or BB goose loads. For fox whatever lead you used to use on ducks...........Harold

the bigger the shot the stronger...
7 1/2 is up there in power for lead shots.
