Default Quad theft, what is up with people???

Is it just in my area or is there a surge of quad theft in the whole Province. I live in Cold Lake and for the past 2 years, there has been a ring of quad thieves which they cannot dismantel so far. My block alone has seen 9 quads taken. Lucky for me I keep my stuff in my garage and it's always locked. Some are not so lucky. One of my neighbors bought a brand new quad last summer(Honda 500), he had it one day.

I went out for a poker game last night and my wife went out with the kids to walmart. When she came back, she let the dog out and there was 2 bicycles in my backyard. After close inspection, my wife noticed that one of the bikes had a leather carrier on it. She found some close in it and a brand new PSP($269). The bikes were stolen a few blocks from us according to the RCMP. My wife noticed our neighbor's fence gate open, she went in to have a look and to her amazement, the 2 tarps that housed their quads from the elements were laying askew on the ground with fresh quad tracks leading out of the yard. As I write this, our neighbors still don't know this happenend as they're in Edmonton for the weekend...I guess. The sad part is that when they moved in this past summer, I had mentioned to the lady that she should put her quads away in the garage so that they don't get stolen. She told me that they would do this as soon as they were all moved in. When I came back from moose hunting in October, I talked to him about his quads as they were still in the backyard. I told him the story about quads being stolen in the area and he shrugged me off as if I didn't know what I was talking about. Although I feel for them, I still see him shrugging me off and what comes to mind is "I TOLD YOU SO".

Anyways, that's 9 quads in a small block, there's lots more throughout the city. The RCMP's told us that there's in excess of 5 quads stolen a night in Cold Lake, that's sick!

How about you guys? Quads are thieves hot item in your parts?

Cabot.

Default quad theft

A friend of the family is a RCMP member and when he was stationed here in GP I would go on night shift rides with him , Quad thefts are way up in the peace area also . Last year I was woken up at 2:30 am by a quiet klunking sound and thought it was strange so I got up and checked my truck as the quad was in the back and you can't see my truck as my garage is infront of the house . Sure enough 4 young punks were in the process of flipping my quad out the side of my truck as I backed it up against the garage door . I yelled at them and they took off running. I called 911 and the police were there with 5 minutes but they never caught them . They informed me that a ring was hitting the peace area taking ATV'S and loading them up in 18 wheelers and moving them to B.C. and SASK. Locked out of sight out on mind is the best deterant

Found one out back of my place a couple years back while hunting.. To make a long story short,, after escorting the cops out to show it to them and then later escorting and helping the owner to get it out of the bush ( well actually I towed it out for him) I found out He was from the city (sorry soul) and he had an acreage by one of our lakes.. But he had the quads locked up if you can imagine in his garage which had an aluminum car door.. The thieves beat the door in to the point that they gained entry.. What the hell ?? his cabin is in a heavily populated acreage,, with full time residence all around.. Are people that fricken scared to even help out a neighbour.. Cripe what do people do crawl in hole and cry ??? Whats up...

What has become of the RCMP? When they become better at reporting statistics than preventing them, we have a problem. Professional crime rings target areas that are weak. Start looking out for yourselves and your neighbours people. That might be your only 'best' option.

The cops stopped some guy west of Sundre a few weeks ago for a broken tail light on his trailer. Turned out the trailer and quad on it had been stolen in Saskatchewan.

Theft is bad everywhere because the penalties are to light.

I had a guy try to steal my truck and another one in a hotel in Spirit River this Fall. The piece of **** got to find out how pavement tastes.

I had my truck stolen from West Ed a few years ago.It was 10.00am and the cop i talked to said there had already been 19 vehicles stolen that morning.

In Slave Lake the other night there were 22 vehicles broken into at an apartment lot in one night..and the list goes on.

I know people in Slave that have backed there trucks in at night to keep thieves from stealing it,only to find in the moring that they had lifted it onto the cab of his truck and rolled it over his hood and into another truck.

I think it is terrible to work hard and buy nice Toys and then have people steal them because they are to lazy to work for a living and buy there own.

Maybe I'm just paranoid but I use good quality locks and lock everything down. Lock quads and jerry cans to back of truck, lock quads and jerry cans to travel trailer when camping and not around. Even have a lock on travel trailer hitch ball so no one can back underneath and drive off with it. It is proven if you make the thief spend a few minutes longer then he's comfortable with he'll move on to an easier target.

Geezer now they just take the whole truck quads and all. Get it to a place to safely unload the quads and leave the truck. My truck with 2 quads in the back was a target in Edson a few months back. My truck will not start with a punched ignition (Mag tech) and thats what saved me. As far as getting into the truck 2 seconds with no key.

I got 3 boys and an old lady at home that all know how to use guns... And a big ***** old black lab that don't like strangers... And just about everyone in the country knows that... We have never lost so much as a nail out of the yard... We have left home for days and never even locked the front door... In my circle the best thing that could happen to you is if the cops found you first...

Default I agree

I 100% agree with you on that one Walleyes. There should be much more dire consequences for deliberate criminals in this country than there currently are.

My neighbour just got home from Edmonton and came in for a chat. They found one of his quads already with the kid on it. He's being charged with theft but wont fess up to who was with him. The quad is really damaged from them taking the front appart to get it started, furthermore, he ran from the officers and rolled the quad.

My neighbour told me that a friend we have in common caught a teenager stealing in his ched not that long ago, he beat the living crap out of him and when the RCMPs showed up, the kid kept complaining that our friend assaulted him. Apparently they wrote in the report that the kid fell on a cinder block .

Anyways, thought I'd share this with you.

Have a good night and thanks for the replies.

Cabot.

Under Texas law, people may use deadly force to protect their own property or to stop arson, burglary, robbery, theft or criminal mischief at night. Did any of you hear about the guy from Texas that shot and killed 2 burglars that broke into his neighbor's house a few days ago. Listen to the 911 call

Yeah.. They learned really good...

They are dead.

It was chilling to listen to that tape when the Shotgun went off.

All for what ??? A bag of Loot?
I really don't think I could kill someone for "Stealing"

But one thing that wasnt answered from the small git of research I did was that the shooter said "They were on my lawn.. They were coming at me"
(Or something very similar)
Now if they were coming at they guy.. Well thats a different story.

But if you were to surprise them in the act, they might kill you.Look at the Barb Danelesko murder.I would rather it be the criminals than me or my family.

The fact of trhe matter gentlemen and ladies is that until the penal system in Canada changes from one slanted towards "rehabilitation"and goes back to one of "punishment" as law abiding citizens we are all in for a rough ride. For example, the increase of juvinile crime where you now have kids as young as 10 involved in serious violent crime, beatings....torture etc. who will get away with nothing more then a slap on the wrist. The bleeding hearts who say that all criminality is due to a bad upbringing, or an abusive childhood etc are the ones we have to thank for this current situation. There are career criminals that have no problem being in jail, after all a nice soft bed, 3 squares a day, TV, PS2 etc...... sure beats being out in the world and working for a living!!! Personally I would like to see a movement back to corporal punishment for offenses like stealing. Maybe 20 lashes and then a week in the hospital to recover from them will be more of a deterent........ or at the minimum hard labour..........have criminals get out and clear land for farmers by hand.......a week of digging, pulling stumps, picking rocks, and felling timber might give them a bit of different attitude about taking others hard won posessions........

My 2 cents

Default What is a bag of loot?

A bag of loot could be a week, or a month, or maybe a year I spent away from my friends and family working. A bag of loot could be someone's grandmothers heirloom jewelry that's been in the family for a hundred years or more. A bag of loot could be a rifle that's been handed down from my grandfather. A bag of loot could be that last shred of security that has now been stolen from you. For some people these things come and go quite easily, for others they do not.

I agree with you Jamie. I don't think I could kill someone just for stealing some of my stuff, but I don't think I could let them walk away either. And one thing I know for sure, I damn well wouldn't convict this guy if I was sitting on the jury.

Not sure if many people here remember the case of Shand King here in Edmonton. He owned/owns Audio 5.1 a high end audio store. He had problems with guys breaking into his store and stealing stuff. He did everything the police recommended, bars, posts, surveillance, lighting etc. yet the breakins continued. Meanwhile his insurance rates were skyrocketing, threatening his very livelihood. He waited at the store and sure enough when someone crashed an Explorer through the front of his store the would be burglar got shot. The police gave the thief a full pardon in exchange for his testimony against Shand King. I am not sure how the case turned out, but either way the store owner was victimized repeatedly by thieves and then by the justice system.

I think we should all have the right to protect our lives, livelihood and property.

Just my 2 cents.

Default yup

Yup. Got that part. Makes him even more of a hero in my books for looking out for his neighbours. Damn shame there aren't more people like him. The world would be a better place. Guess they shoulda hit the dirt when he told them to stop.

I would have liked to seen the looks on their smarmy little thieving faces when they heard that ole pump being racked. Do you think they all of a sudden thought it would have been better to have worked for that "bag 'o' loot" instead of stealing it? Probably.

If you want to make an easy living off of someone elses hard work, there might be some consequences other than a lame ass liberal justice system you have to worry about.

Well fair enough, but if you ever see someone breaking into my house and getting away with "Stuff" please dont kill them.. Call the cops and let them handel it.
I would hate to have to clean the Blood stains off the Driveway.
