Default Kamchatka hunt questions

Just wondering if anyone has been here? What kind of ammo availability is there when yours doesn't make it to the final destination. Plus any tips on odd ball issues that I could encounter. Any first hand info would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I would say an odd ball issue could be your ammo not making it the your final destination, you may want to bring enough for your trip i usually take 14 with me. I like to treat bullets like lighters and make sure I never have to look for one very long.

I'd say ........ 9.3 x 62 for the big stuff OR 7.62 x 54R for most of the other stuff out there are likely the most common ammo you will find.

The average joe out there carries something that looks an awful lot like a Lee Enfield (but it's some sort of Russian make called a Mossin). It's the 7.62 x 54R.

Most of the Elite Russians Jet setting and Safari Hunting guys out there are using things like the 338 Lapua and the other common cartridges because they have money to buy what they want and buy the best they can. You are going to find lot's of Sakos and smuggled Weatherby's.

These rich guys love their guns and their toys and have all sorts of crazy bush vehicles.

Just be careful - they get drunk as _____ and start driving through the bush and shooting like cowboys.

Default Russia

Thanks for the input
Was wondering if my 338 lapua would be a good choice to bring
Have to take a few different planes so just thinking what to do in case everything doesn’t make it
Any other experience from Kamchatka would be great to hear

Can’t really help you with the ammo advise but...... Start drinking vodka now to condition yourself!!
And bring back some good Russian caviar!
Good luck and be safe!

I did some searching on Russian portals for any hunting supplies store in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. There are a few store there but non of them have a website! The only thing I could get out of this search is the following: apparently, only non-rifled gun qualifies as a “hunting” rifle. That sounds really odd, so I’m not sure what to say here... you can purchase a Dragunov sniper rifle but the barrel will have no rifling! That is considered a civilian/hunting rifle! Same is with AK!
Not sure how it works there man, you need to be careful bringing your hunting rifles with you. I would contact Russian customs to find out if there are any restrictions in bringing in AND transporting rifles inside Russia. Do not rely on somebody here, the info may be old and you can end up loosing your guns.
As for the most common cartridge, it is definatly 7.62x54R. There are tons of Mosin rifles there along with the Civilian version of Dragunov (SVD).
