Default 2010 f350 6.4l

So I got a good price on a 2010 f350 6.4l with really low km. Just wondering if anyone has any thing bad to say about this truck. I've heard different things on u.s forms just wanted to hear from some people who live and work here.
Thanks Craig

They stopped making the 6.4 for a reason. Lots of reasons. If you are going to mid it is fine, they are the king of tuning for power but stock if you want mileage at all you will be horribly dissapointed. Hold out for a 6.7 if you don't like tuning.

had a 2010 6.4 removed the DPF and it was great for mileage and power. Never had any issues with it over 200K just did regular services. Have a new F350 with the 6.7 and it is a pig on fuel and does not have the power that the 6.4 had. Don't believe all you hear about the new motor being better. The 2010 was a better truck all the way around in my opinion.

Not going to get into a war here, but you must have issues with the 6.7 or drive like a white sunglasses wearer. The 6.7 is being hailed as the best all round diesel ford has ever offered, mileage, power, everything. Avg 12.4L/100 km on a 1 ton is a great average if you ask me. I have gotten 10.8 driving to Edmonton and back doing the speed limit, but the best I ever saw in my 2010 6.4 Harley was 18.9km/100L, doing the math fill to lid drive fill to lid, not the computer.

10.8 is awesome, my 5.4 uses 17l on the hiway and gives a lot less power than your 6.7.

Had 2 6.0Ls and 1 6.4L. 6.4 L was good once modded. DPF delete ,cold air and Edge chip installed. THEN I bought a 6.7 L, and as jhl stated above was a hog on fuel, less power and figured it should part itself out on the 587 last spring on my way to work. So I parted ways with it and traded it in on a new half ton.
I'm back driving a 2006 6.0L with a few mods, EGR delete, cold air, exhaust and Edge chip and I'm much happier with how it pulls my 40 ft toyhauler. At least it stays in gear and doesnt flip flop between gears like the 6 speed did in my 2011. Ford needs to offer the 3.73 and 4.10 gear ratios in the SRW F350. This would help out the 6.7L and the 6 speed transmission. It was not a factory order option in 2011. Maybe thats changed.
That year of 6.4 L is prob the best and I hope I can find another one soon.

Same, if I try reaaal hard I can get my 08 5.4 down to 17 but it is such a dog compared to the 6.7. I tried a 2013 5.0 and only got 14, not impressed.

I dont know how to pm but what problems are you having? This one was In the low 40s and only has 40000km. Dealer said the guy who owned it bought it for hauling his trailer and just upgraded to a 2014. But we all know that sales people always tell the truth right?

You paid over $40g for a 5 year old truck???

The 2010 Harley Davidson I had 2 years ago was $40g.

Theres good reason why farm tractors and highway tractors dont run diesel v-8's. do yourself a favour and buy the best oil burner on the road. Cummins. The only people who bragg up fords n chevs are the guys who still have full warranty. Trust me. I was a diehard ford guy till it was repair time.

Not really a fair comparison, but to each their own.

Ouch!! I get 15L on the highway with my 6.2 and 20L when pulling my trailer. So glad I got rid of the 5.4. What was the 5.0 in?

I would worry more about the running hours than the km's. The owner could have sat in it all day on site with it running which is a slow death for these engines.

Keep the stock air filter (stay away from aftermarket friction fit filters...don't ask me how I know). If you have to replace the air filter make sure you replace it with something that is held on with a hose clamp or similar...S&B for example. Ditch the DPF. I'd also look into an EGR delete. Make sure all your hose clamps on all air intake lines are in good condition and inspect regularly...if your engine starts sucking dust...doesn't take long for things to go south.

I've had three 6.4's and still have two of them. The two I still have had the HPFP done on them under warranty. One went at 140k and the other at 240k. They are pretty decent engines and was bummed that they quit offering them. The '08 has 360k and over 8500hrs on the clock and runs like a dream. I know I will kick myself for getting rid of it this summer.

Ken, just about any diesel is a beast with enough boost, until the tranny can't handle it

They purposely left the bottom end soft on the ford 6.7's though, you can't go nearly as high as the 6.4's. Also the turbos go to pieces on the newest gen.

Also to the OP, I'm a diesel mechanic and when the 6.4 was announced there were reports that this engine was or partially designed by Caterpillar. There are lots of similarities between this engine and the ACERT's.

They are fine if you stay stock, but past I think 550hp you have to go into the block and turbo.

Like what? The 6.4 and the 6.0 are nearly identical longblocks.Fueling and boosting are a bit different but I don't see what a 6.4 has in common with a cat?

Umm like the fuel and induction system. Also I believe the only part that the 6.0 and 6.4 share is the camshaft. Everything else different including the longblock. I believe the longblock and cyl heads are of similar design tho.

The heui injectors found in the old 7.3s were a cat design which lead to the 6.0 heui design. The 6.4s are piezo style injectors.
