Youth Model .22
Without doing an endless Google search, just wondering if anyone has any ideas for a good .22 for a young lad/new shooter???

You sold me one last year!!
However, there is a nice 190 for sale on CGN, of course that was 4 days ago, dunno if it would still be there now....

A CZ Scout is always a good choice for a young/smaller shooter.

Very generous of you and I appreciate it...but for his first one I would like to get him a brand new in box....sadly doesn't look like Cabelas handles the Thompson- Centers... that single shot would be ideal....

Just offering since it has served its purpose in our family. And just a side note, my daughter prefers her BSA trainer over the Marlin "new in the box" repeater i bought her. Even tho the BSA is older than she and I combined.
Good luck

Hal, how old/big is your new shooter? The marlin is a very light rifle. Bolt action, tube fed. Could be used as a single shot easily and no clip to get in that way.
Just curious

I believe they come from timber creek in Rocky mt House a family member found them and we grabbed one for each of the up and comers ( my nieces and nephews as well ). I havent seen them in there since though they come with a little mildot ncstar scope it seems to work great for the application.

i like the tc feel, haven't shot one yet. both my kids got the cadet to start with, they shoot extremely well, and are easier to feed than the marlin or cricket i looked at, which makes a huge difference for young shooters. it always amazes me how people figure a 10/22 is a great starter, but to each their own.

Its a Marlin model 981T. But, after looking at it I think the length of pull might be too big for a very young shooter. And, it would be hard to cut down because its a synthetic stock.
Good luck.

I let my daughter pick hers out. She handled the remington and savage bolts, a ruger 10/22 (which is what I was hoping she'd pick) and a Marlin 60. She selected the Marlin as being the most comfortable. It's a tube mag semi. not a bad rifle and was under 200 bucks.

Youth 22
Hal,
A few years ago I bough my boys a Henry Mini-Bolt. Black synthetic stock, stainless barrel. Single shot bolt action. What I like about this gun is that once the bolt is closed, the shooter still has to pull back the "plunger" to cock it then they are ready to shoot. It has fiber optic sights, no groove for a scope, you can buy an adapter but i hear they are a pain. At the time I was also looking at the Chipmunks and Savage cubs.
My boys used this little gun from ages 5-9. They out grew it around age 8.
At Christmas I helped my buddy pick out a first 22 for his 8 year old it is a marlin 915Y i believe. Decent bolt action gun with a groove for a scope. Both my buddy and his son are loving it so far, it would make a great gun for a kid that was too small for a full size 22. There were also a couple savages in youth sizes but he liked the Marlin the best.
All the guns are in around the $190 to $230 range.
Good luck and good on you for helping to get another new shoter on their way!

I had a savage cub-t [thumb hole stock] for my kids. It was an awesome little 22. My boy preferred it over the henry because he found pulling to cock it was difficult and he liked the thumb hole stock. It comes with peep sites and is grooved for scope. About 3 1/2 pds with-out scope, bolt action single shot, metal sling mounts, laminated wood stock and accu-trigger! He could out shoot me and my 17hmr using velocitors. Out to 100 yards the gophers did not have a chance, deadly accurate. Cougar chaser now has a perfect 22 for his kids who will end up making him a little more humble, lol. highly recommended .

The CZ Scout tops the list IMO.

This was a close second to the Mini-bolt for my boys. He liked the savage better but i liked the Henry, my wallet, my rules
