Off to my sons house on Sunday. He's cooking two turkeys, one outside in the deep fryer and one in the oven. Along with stuffing, mixed vegetables, creamy mashed potato’s, and GRAVY For my part I'm bringing a smoked ham, sweet potato casserole and fresh buns. I'm really hoping his mother in-law will bring bread pudding..I love that stuff

It's always been turkey for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and Ham for Easter.

Same with our families, but for a few years now we have had turkey for all three of these important dates in our year.

Default Turkey thawing in cold storage today

Turkey dinner with all the fixings for two boys and family Sunday before oldest son flies out to Toronto at 6 AM (yes I got talked into taking him to airport) to promote his new book at Canadian Music week.
Daughter flies in from Vancouver Tuesday so sure we will have leftover turkey hot and cold sandwiches with cranberries. Eventually soup as turkey is my favorite for soup base.

Here's the teaser gang.

The ham drip dying after the brine.

The ham an hour into smoking.

The turkey is out of the brine, and in the cheese cloth waiting for its turn in the smoker, which should start around bed time this evening.

Roast turkey thigh on rye with havarti cheese, tomato, and mayo. Blueberry/strawberry smoothie for dessert.

Almost had a train wreck last night.
The element burnt out in the Bradley smoker for some un godly reason.
Tried getting the bird going around 11pm, and the bloody smoker wouldn't come up in temperature!

Took the multi meter to it. I've got voltage to where it's supposed to be, but zero continuity accross the heating element. If you cruise the interweb this is a fairly common failure.
So I gave the bird coldish smoke (115F) till around 4Am, then I fired the bird in the oven.

I'm gonna be buying a couple of heating elements for the smoker, always keeping a spare on hand. There's reports of higher wattage ones as well, which are supposedly great in our climate.

dick that concoction your fabricating sounds delish despite the 'wattage in the cottage' problems.
since its only me in engineering and the electrician on shift today.
we are ordering a pizza and eating it in the power plant.
a few thousand kilowatts screaming in the background, styrofoam plates, plastic cups and a bibb for sparky...nothing but the finest

following tradition its a donair pizza so im guessing it has that 'just risen' crust.
