Default How were these deer injured?

Any guesses on how these deer were injured? The first one showed up in my yard injured for the first time today. A number of deer come through the yard on a regular basis to visit my bird feeders. A second deer with similar injuries was caught on a trail cam back in 2018. This is in the Tofield area. I have my thoughts on the injuries but I would like to hear what others think.

I looked on the interweb and it looks like it could be caused by mange mites, lice etc... particularly if the area shows no "obvious injury" and the skin is someone intact (but can be irritated).

That would be my guess anyways.

Hopefully it was not some sicko running the deer over with a sled? What month of the year was the last one in 2118 ?

Similar situation here with this deer I'd say.

I had a couple white tails with injuries like that hanging around the farm back when we had cougar problems.

Definately looks like ticks have caused the deer to rub off the area of irritation.

Seen lots of ticky moose in bad years with bald patches.

The blood loss to the thousands of ticks can be enough to eventually weaken the moose. Can't see a reason that deer would be immune to ticks.

Maybe it’s sucking lice. I’ve seen cows rubbed real bad from lice.

When the skin is peeled off it's either cougars or bears, ..... seen it before!

Really doubt a bear attack in the middle of winter. Bears are pretty groggy if they come out of the den at all on a nice warm day, and then they go back into the den.

As for Cougar, you would have claw marks or teeth marks.

This definitely looks like a bad tick infestation getting rubbed off.

Trouble for the game when it rubs off the hair there is a real loss of protection from a cold snap and frozen skin and muscle.

Ticks drive moose completely crazy, so I doubt that deer would be any more tolerant.

I guess the other possibility is they got a little road rash from being hit by a vehicle.

The skin is too clean and pink to be mange. Best guess is road rash and this one is lucky to have walked away from the impact. We have a moose in the Whitemud ravine that was clipped along Rabbithill Road a couple years back. He still has an open spot in the hair on his left side.

Ive torn pants on barbed wire

Same triangle shape

It seems like there is a line between the wounds

Kinda like the space between barbs.

Hide torn, then rubbed off by a back leg....

Just a guess tho

Yep, I have to think Randy called it, due to the shape of the wound? Coyote put the run on deer, deer blasts through fence between 2nd and 3rd strand, and strips the hide clean off. Wound is too definite in shape, too clean for them scratching mites. Those are usually more scabby and generalized?

Fence.

I’ve seen all of the above happening in real time - road rash, mange, dogs running them into a fence. That is without a doubt a fence injury, and not a particularly bad one either. The deer will most likely be fine.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I saw the deer again last night and can confirm that the injuries are confined to the right side of the deer only. The left side appears normal. This tends to support the barb wire theory. The wounds are clean with sharply defined borders which suggest a tearing away action. If it was parasites you would expect the borders to be irregular.
In any case I hope I can follow this deer’s recovery and see how it heals.
