Default UHMW Sheets

Where would a guy buy a sheet of 1/4” UHMW that is 4x10 or 4x8? Looking to build a Siglin sled for hauling cargo.

Try Redwood Plastics if you're in Edmonton. I used to buy them there at an old place of employment.

Where do you live? You can go to a Orthotic shop and ask if the can order it in for you. Myrdal orthopedics in Winnipeg should be able to get it but I'm not sure if they will sell to the public

Check out Norwesco Industries (1983) Ltd. in Calgary. Located on 6 St. SE on the hill above Costco between Blackfoot Trail and Heritage Drive.

X2. UHMW is EXPENSIVE though. You might find that puckboard, hdpe, is cheaper and lighter, and able to do the job just as well.

I bought a sheet from a plastics outlet in Edmonton back in the 1980s.

I expect it is even easier to find now then it was then.

But I only bought one sheet, I found much cheaper alternatives.

I was using it to protect the bottom of my trapping sled. It's shocking how abrasive snow can be when you pull a wooden toboggan 100 miles at 20 mph.

I'll second Johnsons in Edmonton. Got a sheet there this fall. Pricey stuff though.

That's the place. I couldn't recall it but I sure do recognize the name.

That is where I bought my UHMW sheet.

What is the difference between UHMW and HDPE for this type of application?

Always wanted to build a sled.

UHMW is Ultra high molecular weight Poly etheline. It's about 40% denser. Hdpe is high density poly etheline.

Hdpe is more springy, and has some more give to it. It's also a fair bit cheaper.

And as far as I know there is no glue that will hold either. Ya gotta rivet it on, or as I did, get it with a fiberglass backing. Added about a $100 bucks back then could be another $200 now.

Seems like Loctite 4070 will hold it. I'd recommend screwing or riveting though.

Default Thanks

Thanks for all the input and PMs folks!

Talked to the rep at Johnson's Plastics in Edmonton and they can get me a 4x10x1/4" sheet. $275 per sheet.

From the research that I have done, UHMW is more resistant to impacts in cold weather. Can use HDPE for flaps, dividers, risers etc to keep the cost down as well.

I am picturing a sled somewhere between the two designs in the following links.
