1) Just about any predator, unless specifically asked too by a landowner, don't want to shoot something I don't eat, accept maybe the right bear once for a blanket
2) Cow/Bull elk.............Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Limiting my answers to Alberta legal big game

#1 no way = Mountain goat. Nothing moral about it, I'm just too lazy to get fit enough to be able to go where they live.

#1 yes = elk. Done it before. I just like it and where they are.

This could have been my answer too, right down to the "well maybe a bear, once" part. LOL

If you are refusing to help with predator control, but willing to take from the undulate population, you are kind of double dipping so to speak. Why would you not want to shoot the odd coyote/wolf to help the deer/elk/moose/etc population? Just curious, thanks.

1) A porcupine - because in case of emergency, you can kill it and eat it easily without any firearms. I consider them to be life savers

2) A monster bull elk

Because I'm fine with letting nature take it's course. I'm part of nature too, and I'll kill what I want to eat.

I'm not saying you shouldn't be allowed to kill a coyote. Those dead coyote pictures in posts here on the forum don't bother me in the slightest. I just don't want to or feel the need to personally. And who knows, my opinion may change in the future.

Shawn, please realize that in every type of hunting there is that some enjoy , every hunt will have it's own challenges and and its critics.
Your way of hunting is no doubt considered lame by some other hunters. hunters.
I would not be so quick to judge hunting with dogs or over a bait- it is not always cut and dried easy.

I'll second that. Baiting bears is unbelievably challenging.

1. Not interested in Africa.
2. This year: mule draw come to fruition!!!!

I'll make my answers for Alberta

Wouldn't hunt Mountain Goat, I'm past the age that would make this enjoyable.

Favorite to hunt and harvest, bull moose during the calling season.

Sticking to Alberta:
  • Not interested in shooting anything over bait. Not castigating those that do, just not my thing.
  • Big Horn. Anytime I've been on the mountain, they were on the next one over.

Like Cat said to each there own.

If I were comparing hunting cats or bears with dogs to hunting mule deer which you consider a challenge I could tell you which one I would consider lame.

But again whatever fills your boat. Like I said I wouldn't shoot a feral cow in a field, but others enjoy waiting for ungulates to walk out into an Alphalfa pasture.

This whole thread really illustrates your point well, doesn't it? Illegal activities apart, what constitutes "ethical" hunting is as broad as the population of hunters themselves. My passion may be anathema to you. We should demand legal behavior and an approach to hunting that helps ensure as quick and painless a kill as possible. But beyond that we need to be tolerant of each other. Interesting thread.

I am a meat hunter.....period. I don't hunt anywhere that there is a predator problem as far as I know........for that matter, I find where I hunt split toed ungulates they are the issue from a crop damage standpoint. If a landowner asked me to shoot every yote/wolf I saw I would, but on crown land, not interested. The predators have a right to survive too, and too many time in the past as far as I'm concerned man's attempts at regulating predator populations has not worked.
Don't get me wrong, feel free to whack every yote/wolf/bear/cougar that you want too and legally can, but it's not my thing.
If I hunted in areas that have been hard hit by predators then maybe I would feel differently, but I don't.

It's a very interesting thread for sure, because some will not hunt a particular animals for reasons other than what others will not hunt them for , still others will hunt something that others will not for any number of reasons!

I have a friend who won't shoot a duck for love or money, but i love 'em for the challenge and to eat them!
Brother in law hates eating snow geese and won't shoot one, Hornhead however considers them terrific tasting!
I know more than a few hunters who won't step outside the house for a white tail, but will hunt moose until they die.
Still others will not hunt a particular animal or bird because of their personal ethics, while others think nothing of it.
It is what makes the world go 'round and 'round!
