HIDE TANNING
Native Traditional Method
2 DAY Workshop
Bonnyville, Alberta
When: May 28-29
Lunch Included
Come out and spend two days with Ross as he shows you this traditional method of tanning fur pelts by using animal brains or lecithin and smoking over a fire (now that’s natural!)
There are few people left that are teaching this method which is still one of the best ways to produce a superior tanned hide. We will tan a coyote, fox, fisher, or lynx depending on what we have available.
In this two day workshop we cover:
Preparing the fur pelt to receive the tanning solution
Removing any membrane
Preparing the tanning solution
Applying the solution to the fur pelt and working it in
Sewing up a skirt for smoking over the fire
Gathering the right type of wood to smoke the pelt with
Lighting the fire, mounting the pelt on a tripod and monitoring the smoking process
Discuss problems that can inhibit the pelt "taking" the tan
See examples of a finished smoked tan, in moccasins and buckskin clothing
Cost: Will depend on number registered. $$$
