Savage Axis .204
Does anyone have a Savage Axis in .204? What are your thoughts on it? Thanks.

Add on about 200$ at custom gunworx (bedding and target crown) and you will have the most accurate rifle I have ever owned/shot.

I have one.
I put on a Leopold bdc scope on it and a new basix trigger. It shoots dead range at 250+ M and the bullet starts out at 4000 fps. It has no recoil.
It was for my wf, but it shoots sub moa and out the back door is our go to coyote gun.
The ammo is too expensive but I reload. I'm very interested in what powder the manufacture is using to get that MV.
Oh it was cheap too.

No personal experience but from what I hear, if you upgrade the trigger on an Axis you have a decent gun.
personally I think they're butt ugly...

Never was a Savage fan BUT a few weeks ago Wholesale Sports had the Axis XP packages on sale for $289. And I still get $50 rebate from Savage so net price to me $239. So I bought a 22-250. The bases were tight, cross hairs were square....not bore sighted too good. 112 clicks needed to move the cross hairs left, 30 clicks to raise them. The trigger is stiff. Once zoned in the rifle shot well enough to impress me. Went back to the house and bought another one in .243. Same great price for a decent rifle. $240 bucks for a centre fire rifle that will take abuse around the farm....hard to beat.

Personally I love Savage. My go-to rifle is my 111 in 30-06.
I bought my buddy an Axis 2 in 30-06 as an early Christmas present. I've shot both the axis and axis 2, and personally I would say go with the 2. It's a touch more money, but the accu-trigger is fantastic IMO.

If the AXIS is anything like my Stevens 200 you will have a nothing fancy but a very solid get’er done type rig. If it has the old school savage trigger like the Stevens they can be tuned (google “savage shooters” the procedure should be there on the forum if it is still active). Not lightened but made nice and crisp.

I really like the rifles (have a couple) but I would recommend considering a different caliber if you intend to shoot a lot. 204 ammo is fairly expensive, I have one in a different rifle and though it is lots of fun I find my 223 Rem way cheaper to shoot. I've almost accumulated enough brass to start loading for the 204 but would say steer clear if you don't reload. As others said, trigger is a bit stiff but can be easily adjusted, the three we have bought are very very accurate (0.5'' off the bench/ sandbags at 100 yards with upgraded optics). No reason to avoid these rifles unless your self conscious about looks.

I've had the inexpensive Savage package in 30-06 for 7 years now.. It shoots straight, takes a beating, and I've never even considered an upgrade. Looking at getting a .223 or .22-250 in the next couple weeks, and have no hesitation about picking up another Savage.

I had a snow camo edition Axis in .204 Ruger. It was a $450 rifle/scope combo that shot like a $300 rifle, trigger was about 10 lbs. Absolutely hated it, wouldn't hold zero at all. I have 2 other .204's that shoot, so I got rid of my Axis at a substantial loss. Wouldn't have another if you gave it to me.

I'm a big fan of .204R (my only high-end rifle IS a .204R) but I've had some trigger time with an unmodified Axis in .223. I recommended one to my nephew who was looking for a groundhog gun on a student's budget. The gun is as ugly as a bag of hammers if you ask me, but, the thing is an MOA shooter with good ammunition. (it likes 55gr. Hornady V-Max) And by MOA I mean off a rickety Harris-knock-off Chinese bipod and a $50 scope. Bottom line~like any Savage centerfire I've ever used, it's a shooter...so no reason to think one in .204R wouldn't be.
Also, to echo what's been said already... If I didn't reload, I'm not sure I'd be a .204R owner. Ammo selection is next to zero, but as a reloader...all kinds of interesting options. Recoil/report on a .204R is about identical to .223 from what I can tell.

...oh yeah...to finish that point..
I'd urge you to consider one in .223 instead of .204R, unless you have a specific reason/urge/curiosity about the latter. I already own a .223 Savage (Precision 10, see avatar) and if I could only have 1 caliber for varmint work...it would BE .223.

Buy one and shoot it. It's awesome . I seem to find 32gr or 40gr anywhere from 18$ to 24 a box.
I've shoot coyotes out to 450 with 40 gr vmax with mine. Had a model 12 savage model 10 savage and model 25 in 204. Had a 243 in an axis. Shooting a 1200$ Rem 700 now. I still think the savages shoot just as well or a bit better.
