Default 5.9 Cummins injectors

My sons 2007 Dodge with the 5.9 Cummins started running rough the other day, the dealership says that 3 of the injectors are done. Is there a better place in the Edmonton area to get diesel parts than the dealership or Cummins? These things must be made of gold, Cummins wants $1100 bux each.

Welcome to the world of Diesel engines. Try any Diesel shop you may have to shop around a bit. Try amazon as well. Just checked amazon and there is a set right now for just over $5000 free shipping

Try some of the aftermarket diesel performance parts websites. Common rail injectors are typicly fairly expensive no matter where you go.

Best of luck

Ask wich injectors and do it yourself. Their cheaper through Napa or aftermarket and not hord to change. All you need is so mechanical knowledge and a torque wrench. Also ask the dealer what code it has in as one injector will take out the whole bank. Front 3 is bank one and rear 3 are bank 2. I'd be questioning them as a whole bank dosnt fail at the same time

Also check resistance of the bank of injectors. If one is way out its more than likely the one. Another way is to pull them and have them bench tested.

I got all my injectors done at a big dog performance in Calgary for $3200 on my 05. The guy I talked to name is Daryl and they did a great job. This was about 3 years ago.

Default Injectors

They say it's the rear 3 that quit. I thought it was strange for 3 to go at once, is it possible that the injectors are ok and something is not firing that bank?

I had #5 go out on me 2 years ago - my mechanic only replaced #5 and stated because they are very easy to access (unlike a Chev / Ford) that you could replace them one at a time like a spark plug (don't know; my first diesel)

At the time, my code reader stated bank 2 problems and I thought I'd have to replace all 3 as well.

But, over 2 years later and she's still going strong.... Just my personal experience.

Could be the wire harness, they can get soaked with oil, crack and then short out, causing what looks like a failed injector. If your not in a hurry i deal with this fellow in Golden CO. for my injectors and parts. http://www.maxtorqdiesel.com/ Rob and Dawn

3 injectors do not fail at the same time , other issue rather than injectors individually !

Contact XL Mechanical out of Blackfalds AB. They are cummins specialists and will help you out much cheaper than any where else

Reason #765483736 why I got rid of my Dodge... diesel injectors are ultimately all made by Bosch. GM, Dodge, Ford all the same sht that's just built to fail.

Yep, those wiring harnesses are famous for breaking wires. Dirtbags made them about as thick as a hair on your head!!

I did my own in my 2003 5.9. Costed me $2200 for all 6 and is fairly easy to do. If you are going to do 1 then do all 6.

Stay away from the stealership though unless you got any type of warranty.

Edit: It is easy to find out what injectors are bad by getting some hydraulic fittings and capping off injectors one by one. Could also eliminate them being the culprit to.

I agree with elkdump, normally 3 injectors do not fail all at once on the same bank, I've never seen it and I used to work as a diesel tech for Chrysler, I have seen the gasket/ harness cause a no injector response and a intermittent miss!

I have the same truck 2007 5.9

Check the resistance on each injector on the bank of three.
If one is out of a small range then it is the ONE that has failed.
Can't remember the reading, but check Utube, and dodge cummins forum on how. Very easy to do

Watch out for one thing....had one bank fail- trouble code.
Checked them....all within spec....so changed the harness gasket (much cheaper at cummins parts dealer than chrysler--by half). Started good.....went for a spin.....all good for 10min....problem again. What the heck!!!

Back home, valve cover off,....takes 15min. All in spec. Hmmmm? Start it up and runs good. Hmm????? Ran it till the issue shoes up again. Tested again and finally found the one out of spec.
So when it was cooled down or was off for a bit, the issue disappeared, once run for 10 minutes, the faulty injector finally showed itself.

This was at 161,000km......a hair past warranty. Currently at 238,000km and no others with a problem......SO.....it may not be necessary to change them all.....depends on KM.

Where I got mine. Best to call to ensure you get exactly what you need.
Price of standard injector is $360US.....the exchange will bite you to $468 plus GST. But a lot better than the stealership.

To replace one, a couple of hours your first time. Did mine in the driveway. Half the time is taking and replacing the value cover. Easy job with minimal tools. Could probably do all 6 in 4 hours. (hint- don't let anyone torque the little brass connectors to 150lbs....that could cost you time)

So I was watching u tube and they take off the rocker arm to get the injector out. Can you then just put the rocker arm back and torque it in the same position you took it off or do you have to make sure the piston is at TDC ? I am asking as I do not know and do not want to screw up.

2003 injectors are much cheaper because they are single-injection event as opposed to 3. A 2004.5 uses in-cylinder EGR so you have a pre-injection, then the main injection then a post injection with the cam set to keep the exhaust valves closed long enough to burn off most of what's left. That's also why your oil is midnight black right away in an 04.5 and up. 04.5-07 were horrible, horrible years for these already horrible trucks.

Yes you have to get to TDC and then set the valves to factory spec.
Check the dodge cummins forum on this, as they have some very good , very detailed threads on how to set the valve lash. Much better than I can explain.

And it's a good thing to do anyway....one of those seldom done tune ups thst will make your engine run smoother....so maybe start there and build up confidence/experience.
