That would be Steve Jennings, that does "The Ultimate Boatman" pattern, which is a variation of others. Steve was the first to "market" it, and it is a successful pattern.

Not to worry...I knew who you meant. I use to stop into the Little Fort Fly Shop, many, many years ago, and shoot the ****e with Steve. He's moved on from Little Fort, to Kamloops...and you will also find him, way south fishing Bones!

Fishin' hole and wholesale sport should carry a few different boatman and backswimmer patterns.
Have fun. When they're on, these patterns can be a blast to fish.

I was trying to get to Icky. I use them all the time, but they are down like you said. I hope they're up and running soon.

Boatman Pattern
Check the new edition of Fly Fusion Magazine for a neat one from Gary Hanke of Edmonton. If it would quit snowing I would be out trying them myself.

This is one of several variations I use. The body colour and overback are changed to match the boatman at the lake fished. The bead head is varied from tungsten>brass>glass depending on sinkrate needed for the presentation type. The one shown above has a bead of tungsten c/w a body of yellow sparkle dub mixed with a yellow rabbit fur binder and a overback of Olive dyed Bra Elastic 1/8" wide. The thread is light olive. Super glue is used at the bead, between the legs and at the tie in point near the rear of the hook. The hook is a Mustad C068 2x short - 2 x strong size #14.
A similar fly c/w a glass bead.

As a newbie to the sport, I too am not a tyer and rely on what I can buy locally or online. Nothing for boatman in my local Wholesale in Lethbridge; very limited selection of anything there right now. I was waiting patiently to see if Icky was going to be back up soon, but so far no go... I'm really hoping this is not a a permanent thing, as I was very happy with the last order I placed from there. Meanwhile, I'm awaiting an order from reelflies, which will include a few boatman.

waterboatman patterns
Despite boatman falling each of the last few evenings, I've been having great success on leech patterns.

agreed re: weak selection at Wholesale Lethbridge.... I tied some Water Boatmen this spring for that hatch on the Blackfeet Res, tied 6, fished 2, and the rest still in my vest...

I have used boatmen a lot on stillwaters but not flowing waters. Does anyone have any presentation tips for flowing waters?

I like this one Don. It looks like the over body is tied in first, then the bead head followed by the rest of the tye. Is this correct?

I don't think you will find 'boatmen in flowing waters, at least I have never seen one there.

Boatman can be found in flowing waters just the same as stillwaters. You'll find them in slower water. Check out the Bow River below Carseland come October, tons of them.
