Default Neighboring bait site

A buddy and I have an established bait site that we've been running(same location for many years) and the bear action is starting to heat up. We were working at the bait the other day and decided to check out the nearby beaver pond. As we did we discovered another bait site that was recently set up, probably 100 yards from our bait!

Needless to say this is disappointing. Our barrels and stand have been set up for a while, signs posted, everything. The bait barrels on this new site have not been filled yet. We put up a sign that this other hunter will surely see the next time he heads to his bait site. I don't see how he could have missed our bait but I'm hoping it was a simple mistake.

I realize it's public land and we don't own it, but I'm hoping this hunter will realize how close the bait is placed to ours and move it out of there. I know that's what I would do. Has anyone had a similar experience? Suggestions?

Default wishfull thinking

Good luck, my guess is the goof just made the assumption that you know what is going on since your stand has been there a while. Same as the jerk who pulls his boat within casting distance of your's as soon as he see's you catching fish....you know the type....the *******s of our sport pretty much sums up who would do this. Confront him and make him move at least 1 klm.

Some people have no class and tend to believe they can do what ever they like .. I don't care if it is public land , use your heads and don't infringe on others .. On the flip side , at least they didn't steal your stuff or diesel your baitsite like some peolpe would have ..

so you have been in same site for many years... it is public crown land maybe this year you need to pack up and give someone else a turn....

there are no squatter's rights!....

Just playing devil's advocate....

Common sense would dictate that the first bait set up should remain, and the other one should be moved. Having two baits so close together will just ruin it for both parties.

Everyone has their opinion for sure, but I know it's a lot of work to develop a bait site. I don't agree with you, I think good etiquette would be to find a site well clear of any established baits.

I once set up a bait 100 yards from a guy, had no idea it was there as I came in from a different direction. It was about two weeks since I put my bait out when I get a call from the guy; I had my phone number on my sign. He was good about it and told me he would stay out of my bait site if I did the same. I did have my bait out before him but it was a site he had been using for years. I told him I would not put the bait out there the following year.

If I would have known there was a site there I would have put it someplace else. We did take a nice color brown bear off the bait that year.

Hope everything works out for you.

I gues I'll find out on Thursday when I go to fill my barrels if it's my site but we've been there for four years now. We'll see. PM me if you wish. What color are the barrels?

x2

I have unknowingly placed a site close to others [sketchy cardboard signage that had got wet/blown down] and have had people start baits dang near in eyesight from my treestand. People and bear will choose the best areas so overlap is gonna happen. esp. closer to civilization. Never have lost any gear but from the sounds of it I just been lucky. There are a few guys with just enough ambition to dump barrel/baits out and leave them out, I find sites all the time hunting november whitetail.

You've been hunting the area for years. Every year you must remove your bait and clean up your sight. All I'm saying is......is their a chance this guy moved in before you set up your bait this year?

I agree with most. Probably didnt know you were there or else he did and decided to put up bait before you. Sometimes we get sloppy with our "secret spots" by leaving nice quad tracks leading to our secret spot. People will follow quad tracks out of curiosity. Maybe your spot was discovered last fall while this guy was hunting and decided it would be a good place to hunt for spring bear. Give in or move. Cover up your tracks in the future.
