Default .410 capabilities

Your opinion would be apreciated. Which round and load for the .410 would be best/you use for the following:

1) Bush bunnies
2) Grouse

Second: Can the .410 do the job? would a 20, 16, or 12 be better.

Thanks in advance.

Depends in who's hand the .410 is in. If in the hands of an experienced shooter, yes. If the shooter is not experienced then it could discourage them from hunting because of the amount of shot and less power from other shotguns. I started on a 12 gauge and later enjoyed using a .410 on grouse, partridge and pheasants. Would use them on cottontails but not on jack rabbits. I started my son on a youth 20 gauge, but now he'd rather use a .22 when shooting birds. Just my personal thoughts.

I have been using a .410 now for prob 15 years on grouse and rabbit they are an awesome little gun. I recently bought 2 pump .410's for my 2 older sons and we are looking forward to grouse hunting this fall. The reason I like a .410 over some of the larger guns is damage to the birds, if you do happen to put a bad shot on a bird the damage seems to remain minimal.
We have found over the years that the most allround effective loads are all in the 3" mag and #4 - #6 load.
Like I said I love those little guns they are fun to shoot and relatively cheap...

i had an IGA backpacker with a 12" bbl for grouse n stuff. what a waste in of ammo in my hands. sold it
the 22 was far more capable and accurate. a 22 with birdshot was a more formidable weapon for me.
IMO if one round could be discontinued forever, the 410 round would be it.

I also have used a 16 +12 guage for grouse but if the bird is fairly close, I aim a little high or else there won't be anything left to eat. You can also buy cheap 12 guage ammo, but I've never seen cheap .410 ammo.

Used one for about 15 yrs, still kick myself for selling it. Was great for grouse. .22 is great for on the ground shots. At least with the .410 a guy could take a wing shot. I been kinda looking for another one. I wouldn't mind one for throwing behind the truck seat or hauling on the quad. The more beat up the better, as long as it works.

I have a little double 410 that is handy for grouse. Esp. when shooting them from allong a road where a .22 is not legal. I like to use 7 1/5 shot when I can get it but 4s 0r 6s work ok.

I have a little single shot .22 rifle, that I sometimes put in my day pack if I am hunting big game and want an option to shoot a few grouse.

If I am walking in the bush with it where there may be bears I'll put a couple slugs in my pocket.

I agree the 410 is awesome for grouse. I always use 3" shells in 6 or 7 1/2. I think it would great on bunnies as well, but have only used it once on them. It worked great that one time.
