First Muley
Decided to draw a Muley tag in southern Alberta this year. Being from northern Alberta I had never taken a mule deer before. Opening day spotted 12-15 bucks, a couple might have been repeats. Day 2 I spotted a buck and about 8 does with the binos and decided I better have a better look with the spotting scope, decided this was better than anything I seen on day one. I watched the deer enter a large coulee and assumed they bedded down after not seeing them come out or any other movement for a half hour. Only problem was it was across a river on land I hadn’t acquired permission yet. A phone call for permission and a look at google earth to figure out how to get somewhat close and I was off. Parked the truck and hiked towards the coulee, decided to peak over the edge about 3/4 of the way up, started glassing and found a smaller buck, soon after a doe appeared, I was spotted and before long they were all standing and starting to make their way in the other direction along with the buck I was looking for, grabbed the range finder and it showed 392, the buck stopped and turned broadside just as he crested the top edge. The wind was howling and even with bipods I wasn’t confident, I threw my pack down and laid across it and felt much more steady, let some lead fly and then the work began! Not a monster by no means but for a northerner I’ll take it. Not the best pic, I wedged my phone in my binos and hit the timer lol shoulda took some more time to clear the shrub I guess.
