Default So I just BBQd some elk ... with the fat

I’ve never done it.

It cooked up on the BBQ.

I gave it a whirl....

Pleasantly surprised. Not really a bad taste. I quite liked it.

Anyone else eat the fat from elk or deer?

I just habitually cut it off... cause everyone else did.

And yea.... bbq time in the CNP... whatchagonnado?

I keep telling ya...

Deer, elk, moose fat are typically tasty.

The issue for most is the tallowy residue stuck on the roof of your mouth.
Can't say I like that much either.

A kid was told it's no good, cut it off.
And he told two who told two....

Now most say it tastes bad, yet they've never tried it.

The new fad is to trim all the "Silverskin" off cause it tastes bad....

Ugh.

I wonder if cow would taste better than bull?

Cause this be a pretty flavored bull.

What does "Better" mean?

I prefer bush deer to those that were eating wheat all day long.
But that's me.

Pronghorn, sheep and caribou are the bomb, the most complex of flavours matching the Plantae'tion they live in.

Can't get that by eatin oats.

Nope, I cut the fat off my steaks etc. Deer tallow is disgusting. Waxy and a bad flavour imo.

Deer fat looses its taste when marinated in orange juice (frozen stuff). I put deer ribs in that with lee perrins, garlic and onion powder for about 6hrs and you're good to go with all the fat on the ribs but no game taste. Still greasy as heck though.

I trim the "silverskin" because it plugs my grinder, makes my burgers chewy and sometimes hurts my teeth. Never considered taste.

I’ve shot mostly cows ..... so over the years my palate just expects that flavor.

But your right.... it’s not a bad tasting bull... just different.

Fat on for me. Seems pretty bland without it. I also cut up the leg bones and use them for soup stock. I like the taste of deer.

This. As a human that can use a knife I choose to do this.

I just finished cutting up my last quarter of elk. I trim everything and trust no one when it comes to my meat. I once brought a big bull elk to a butcher and it was the worst wild game I've had. I'm not sure it was even my meat.

I'm glad you gave it a shot, but I have enough other sources to get my fat, I keep my wild game trimmed up.

A wt deer that's been feeding in a barley field
or an elk that's been feeding in a silage pit don't get any better

Deer fat is like licking or chewing a candle dipped in urine!

A lot of us will embrace the wild aspect and eat game fat, silver skin etc. But if you feed to someone that exclusively eats pork/beef/chicken, they will spit it back on there plate. It tastes “different” , maybe not different bad to us but to them it isn’t what they are used to and immediately the guards are up and this isn’t any good. I eat deer/elk/moose regularly .. multiple times a week and I love it . But to a random it’s not the meat they are accustomed to and automatically think it must be bad because it’s not what they expect it to be. When cleaned as good as possible you elimate these issues to an extent but still not a beef/pork/chicken meal so it is put on trial against the grocery store meats .

They are a snack that is taken for granted! I have a friend that comes up every year from Pennsylvania and the first thing he does is grab a few econo packs of them because he can't get them there.

Myself, I like them a lot but after a couple handfuls I'm done.

I think people have different taste buds. Some like the taste of silverskin and venison fat. I notice at a few wild game dinners that some dishes go fast and others barely get touched. Ask some people that are chowing down on something and they say try it it's great, so someone else tries it and pretty much gags because of the deer fat in it. To me it tastes like stinky feet smell. Some people like it. Makes me hurl.
