Default "Perching"???

I just read the Obed Lake thread and didn't want to hijack. Forgive my ignorance, but could someone please explain this to me? I not an overly avid fisherman, I enjoy it and and am getting back into it, but I haven't paid alot of attention to "fishing issues" in recent years. What is the deal with people putting perch into trout lakes? Why do they do it? How does it ruin the lake? Just curious. Thanks.
Dave

Default perch

For instance Hasse had good raibow numbers with a variety of age class. About 4-5 years ago perch started showing up. Big perch guy I know caught a 15inch perch. No predators perch population got so high they stunted. Now you can't even fish flys or spinning gear and keep 4-6 inch perch from chasing your lures. Now theres pike well thats a waste of stocking 5-6lb pike can make an easy meal out of a fair size trout.

A couple of pages back there is another thread on this topic:
http://outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=58166

I'm not sure if that will answer all your questions, but it should answer some.

It has to do with the chronic illegal introduction of perch into stocked trout ponds.

Honestly, I support to government's efforts to bring a stop to this.

No worries. Since you don't frequent the fishing forum, you had no idea it was there

Default perch in obed

there has been big perch and big browns for twenty years so its not like someone went there five years ago, threw some perch in and destroyed the brown trout fishery

I don't believe your conclusion is right otherwise they would still plant triploid
rainbows wouldn't they ? Now there is some truth to the move by fisheries
to stop stocking non natives period at least for what I have heard from a hatchery guy. But as for Obed it was identified as were a large list of trout lakes , which I can post if you want, that have perch in them and fisheries has decided they will no longer stock the lakes with trout.

We are on the same side here ..I think its a bad decision and we can fire e-mails off to the MLA Mr Campbell.
