What's the go to size for T.C. Motos on Cold Lake? I'm thinking of meeting my son-in-law there for a weekend soon, and want to know what I would need. I have a lot of 1.4oz & 2oz T.C. Motos. Anything smaller and it's shopping time at Kim's. Thanks.

Ohhh don’t forget the not so much talked about spoons too, bar none when everyone has sat there for an hour I pull out #2 Len Thompson’s and down to the bottom it goes, bang the bottom hard and retrieve fast...stop..I’m on

If you watch the spoon action when you pull up hard she bolts up twisting fast and when you let it down she flutters all over the place...I change up the amount of force to create that lunatic bait fish action and it just works.

Spoons for sure. I was just going to bring the stuff I use for jigging lakers in the Summer. I was just worried it might be a bit big.

Jigging raps work great too. Size 7 and 9, white, chartreuse, gold, firetiger are always dependable for me. The little cleo 3/4 oz spoons (blue and silver) have gotten them fired up before too.

I have a whole tackle box full of tube jigs. I must not be fishing them right because I've only caught a handful of lakers on them in 3 winters.

Everything else I use works waaaay better for me lol

Thanks for the heads up. I've got a 3600 full of jigging raps, though not a lot of size 9s...jigging raps are to me as tube jigs are for you. Spoons I have I dunno how many 3700s full of them. I'll thin them down and bring a few for sure. Just booked next Friday through Monday at the Evergreen Birch Lodge. Looking forward to something different.

Went out for a few hours this morning by myself. Fished 55 FOW, ice was 13 inches and a few spots have flood water. Managed to catch 10, lost maybe 5-6 more. Magic lure was a glow white airplane jig tipped with some belly, absolutely smashing it. GL out there !

Last year I did really well with the 3.5" TC Moto walleye tubes and some 2-4" paddle tail swimbaits during the midday hours when the lakers weren't as aggressive. Those big 5-6" tubes work great during prime time though.

Have never ice fished for Lake Trout, but would love to take my kid to Cold Lake this year. Do you need to have a special rod? What is the recommended line? Guessing with all this snow that it may be difficult getting around, can you walk on and catch fish? TIA/

For a rod you'll want some backbone. 36"mh at minimum. Guys do it with short flimsy rods but.....
20lb braid and a 6-10' 15-25lb flouro leader. Personally I direct tie everything....no snaps or swivels unless the lure dictates I need a snap.
If you're walking I'd suggest the marina....its the shortest easiest walk to deep water.... followed by French Bay.....but usually there's a decent trail to the common spots that any 4wd pickup or medium suv can navigate to.

Lost two
Real slow
14” of ice
Had more marks and fish in front of the ski hill.

Another group out here moving more than I am trying to play the edges and they got nothing.

Had a sled come by running and gunning and said the same thing more action it seems near PP or closer
To shore, all I know there was more bait there.

Does anyone know is the cold river access usable?, usually it's OK but not sure lately with all the heavy snow we had earlier this winter.

I think we will set up in French bay this weekend....just not sure if I'm going north or east yet lol. The wind forecast is telling me to stay to the north west side.

snowing here now....dam...if this keeps up ice travel will be limited to sleds only.

I am going over to English bay area tomorrow...I know we catch 200 yards of the provincial park beach area in summer so gonna give that a shot.

I bet out near the river area might provide a variety of species too...decisions, decisions.

Do you mean the cold river or??? Just wondering if you know if the access or "boat launch" is usable for vehicle traffic this winter?

The road is usually maintained fairly well from what I remember being that it's in the PP....but been a long time since I've been down it.

Yeah the road is maintained well, just wondering if the boat launch is clear enough to get on the lake. I'll check it out tomorrow or Saturday likely

Nope the medley river...she flows into cold lake...cold river flows out.

Fished for a few hours today, action was sporadic into the afternoon then died off after 2:00pm. Ice was 13-14 inches, 55 FOW, 14 fish caught, lost just as many. Tube jigs seemed to work best, all colors and sizes were working. Actually seen fish and wildlife for the first time this year!

Hey. what location are you driving onto the ice from? Is there thick ice throughout the lake or some thin spots that you have noticed?

Ice seems to be 12” to 15” have not found thinner around the PP, French bay, marina and out to the hump too

Not sure around the island or where water flows in or out of cold lake.
