Default Late Season Cow Elk in 305

Hey folks, wife has a cow elk tag for 305. We can head out most any day between now and Jan 20. We've never hunted 305, so open to suggestions. Anybody got ideas about where to start? Cheers!

Head south on 22 to the Hutterites and go east up into the hills. You will find a big herd up in the hills

Good luck. Sincerely. Not sure why people waste priority on a blind WMU. Your scouting should have already happened months ago.
Life gets in the way sometimes so I won’t rake you too hard over the coals. Start studying satellite imagery. That’s the first place I start scouting. That should help narrow things down a wee bit.

Hunting/fishing is way more fun. when you do your homework and scout an area. It eliminates fruitless trips usually by a large percentage. Just saying.

The late season in 305 is a bit different. 2-3 years of priority usually does it. Lots of crown land and massive herds of wintering elk that are not around all year. Some locals tell me a lot of the elk come from BC. as the snow gets deep and they head for the foothills. You can spot elk from hwy 22 laying in the middle of nowhere.

On the east side of the foothills, if you see a herd of elk in the open I can pretty much guarantee you they are on private land and permission won't be granted.
On the west side by 22 I can't say for sure but I'm guessing your talking south of the Waldron where its private land?

I said off hwy 22 ! Waldron is a grazing lease. 305 is a big Zone. I didn’t tell the OP to just start shooting elk wherever they see them ! And I can guarantee you that all the elk aren’t on land that you can’t get permission on ! Many signs with phone numbers and names of contacts. If you don’t want to help the people just scroll on through.

Don't shoot on the west side of 22. It is not 305.

He means the west side of the foothills, not the highway.

the foothills are on both sides of 22 down there. I’ve hunted elk in 306 for 15 years and have built relationships with many landowners on both sides of the hiway. Pm me for info madman

They are and most people refer to the hills west of 22 as the whaleback which is in 308.
I'm done on this, these guys can think whatever.

Been a long time since I hunted 305. Use to be an area called bow crow forestry that seemed to produce some good elk (not for me) but I did see a few hunters that had filled there cow elk tags. The roads where narrow and steep but was a very scenic area as well. Good luck and let us know how you make out
