Default A bird in the freezer experiment

Last season we had 12 grouse to put in the freezer.

I washed and dried them, wrapped in Saran wrap and put them in a plastic ammo box I got at Princess Auto. It has a rubber seal. Put it in the freezer.

Zero evidence of freezer burn. They are perfect.

I know in years past Ive had some that, regardless how I wrapped them, id get some freezer damage.

But, with this idea, im looking at 5-6 month old frozen birds that are really well preserved.

Just an idea I thought Id share. I think the ammo can cost me $8.99 on sale....

Would probably work just fine for 3 whole rabbits too.

Good idea wouldn’t have thought of that. Plastic bags are not impervious to air or moisture but the heavier plastic used with vacuum sealers definitely helps.

If I intend to cook things quickly, I just use ziplock bags. But, if it is going to be in the freezer for a while, I always use the brown, waxed, butchers paper. I never get freezer burn in the paper. Not even the smaller and awkwardly shaped grouse.

Good to know that your method provides good results. My buddy started to freeze rainbows in 2L milk cartons filled with water. I used to buy char in Goose Bay that were frozen in water also. Wife baked a large rainbow last week. After the meal she asked if I could tell if their was any evidence of aging. I couldn't tell if it was caught yesterday or last year was my response. In fact it was from Jan of 2020. Fish was vacuum sealed using a FoodSaver.
