Most people refer to Richardson ground squirrels as gophers in these parts, so I’ll go with that.

Onoway area has some, I’ve heard about some Westlock/Barrhead way, but as a general rule the further east towards HWY 2 brings better concentrations, that’s in a rough east west line from Hinton too.

Around these parts we just call them gophers and there aren’t that many around Onoway.

Aside from the odd person in Drayton, most everyone else just calls them gophers

I lived in Edson for 5 years back in 03. No gophers west of the Mcleod river for sure..

45 minutes west there's a bunch..
They might be the Richardson things but I call them gophers... way easier to say.
And their not very gun shy either.
Still winter out here though so could be tough..
PArks Canada has been trapping and relocating them from around the town entrance and cemetery area last year.. Not sure but I think it has something to do with future pipeline work or something.
I'll mention to them they should relocate them an hour east.

I can't imagine going to the effort and expense of catching and releasing ground squirrels. Marmots perhaps, but a pest like ground squirrels, doesn't make much sense.

They might say they're relocating them, although doubtful, but most would hit the gas pipe.

HaHa.
Someone should go over to the Gopher Count thread and correct them.

Those are most likely Columbia Ground Squirrels, they populate the Rocky Mountains and Eastern Slopes. Different Species than Richardson's; same Family and Genus. Slightly larger than Richardson's, they make for easier targets.
