Default Where to Hunt?

Hi

Im looking for some recommendations on where to go this fall for a Deer/ Elk hunt.

Not looking for a guided hunt just some recommendations on maybe a good cabin to rent for a week close to Crown Land. Would look at a lodge as well.

We are in Calgary but willing to drive anywhere within the province for a good location.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

I’d rent an RV or hook onto the holiday trailer and head to the Saddle Hills area in WMU 358.

Perhaps that used to be the case but not any more. Now polluted with people and subsistence hunters. In fact there was a large camp of subsistence hunters there last year & even they gave up and moved on. Don't take this as running down certain types of hunters. Not my intention & they have to eat as well. Just my personal observation. Good luck to the op.

What I'm finding helps is listening to Remi on the "Cutting the Distance" podcast. He actually breaks down what to look for and how to decide on a spot to hunt for yourself based off behaviors and habitat of species.
I know it's not a specific answer but I don't have the experience to designate a specific place.

Some of the provinces best elk and deer is in 212. Permission on private gets you away from the crown crowd.

Not many unbusy places left.

The trick to finding places that are not busy is go burn boot leather and scout. Asking other hunters for locations on a forum or in general just leads to locations others already hunt at best

Even in the busiest areas you can get away from others if you look hard enough for pockets others are not hunting. I hunt public land that most say is very busy and manage to get away from others but I put in a lot of effort looking for places to avoid people

This is honest truth

Its a tough question to ask, and harder to answer

Most have spent hours driving, checking maps, asking permission and scouting before they find a spot

I suggest you do this. It pays off. Your summer will be busy by the sounds of it.

Huntinstuff; I would substitute the word years for your word hours. Also many, many, many miles and doors knock upon.

What part of "HUNT" do you not understand. You need to do your own homework just like in school. Buy a good pair of boots.

Are you saying that all the guys/gals who drive around the roads and fields out here are not hunting? Seems like they get a lot of animals doing it.

Look up the ACA sites. You are free to hunt on them and learn some new area. The biggest part is making the effort on your part.

Hunters are willing to help other hunters out PROVIDING the newbie is willing to earn it by doing some legwork themselves on whichever Hunt they decide to go on.
