Default How To Kill A BIG Buck?

Hi friends,

So my thread is titled How To Kill A BIG Buck?

The answer is a simple one: Don't kill the small ones and let them walk by and wait for a big Buck!

Was out with a fellow AO member deer hunting last night, he passed on a small Buck that many people would have killed to put meat in their freezer. If all of us had his attitude we would have many more big bucks. I am proud of that young man!

Lots of great Outdoors Men and Women on AO, what a great place to meet fellow enthusiasts.

Cheers and happy hunting to all

Your thread tittle should be how not to kill a small buck.

Not everyone wants to pass up smaller bucks, nor is there a need.

You can’t kill good bucks on the couch though and that will never change.

How about shame on you meat hunters for shooting a young animal that could have grown up and stroked someone's ego?

That would be a good title! Sheesh.

I'm proud of any young hunter that kills ANY buck in a fair chase situation.

Are you talking about big antlers or big bodied deer ?
I have killed lots of both but frankly I really don’t care about antlers as long as the deer is legal .
As far as big bodied deer go, if hunting where the deer typically have big body Weight one might hold out for a bigger deer .
Where I mostly hunt the deer are generally smaller so I don’t pass on on a legal deer if given the chance .
I also have limited time to hunt these days and that is another factor .
I don’t pass on the first day that I would not pass up on the last day and frankly don’t give a dam what others think of that attitude .
I have the greatest respect for all the animals I kill, big or small .

Not all small buck will turn into BIG bucks even if left to get old.
If bucks with inferior genes were taken out of the breeding group the genetics would improve.

Also, some of us look for big deer but in the end enjoy eating the meat and hate having tags left unfilled.

I've shot BIG deer but also my share of little guys.

I’ve passed several bucks this season. Looking for a trophy. I don’t need any more meat, because we have a moose in our freezer. I just like th challenge. If I feel the need to shoot something, I’ll get after the coyotes. That’s just me though. Good luck to everyone!

Here is another GREAT IDEA!

The great gentleman farmer that let us hunt his property was EXCEPTIONAL and VERY NICE and WISE he is 83.

When we got to his home yesterday I knocked on his door and gave him and his beautiful wife a delicious Sour Orange Pie that I made by hand the day before.

On the way out he stopped us to tell me that my pie was Delicious. That made my day!

Always ask for permission and treat the land owners the way you want to be treated. It feels so good, even if you get skunked everyone feels great!

Treat all farmers like you would treat your best friend, it goes a long way 😎

Or another item is don't shoot the first buck out of the pushed bush. My case it was the 4th that was the biggest. I had already shot the 2nd!! Scored 160.

Well killing big bucks starts with getting permission on great properties, especially if you are city folk like me.There have been enough treads about getting permission right?

I did not start this tread to start an arguement. I just wanted to share my experiance hunting yesterday is all, is that ok?

So Grousehunter, let’s see you put some substance behind your words of wisdom.
Let’s see all the big bucks you’ve killed.

There are big deer living on crown land as well .
Like I stated ,the thread was started shout killing big bucks ( whatever that size is )not how to get permission on private land - city dweller or not.

Hey, I get it.

That is why I always pass up the smaller bucks, so I can shoot a monster and throw away his antlers.

It is hard though, there are just way too many bucks that would never make the book even if you let them live till old age gets the better of them.

So, you hunt to put horns on your wall. I hunt to put meat in my belly.
Problem is, you did not pay one penny more fr your license then I did for mine.

So the way I see it, if I have to pass on the buck I want so you can get the buck you want, then I'm gonna take that buck away from you if I can.
Not because I want the antlers, but because fair is fair. Is it not?

After all, I'm hunting antlers just like you are, that makes us equals.
I just have a different purpose in mind for those antlers.

But I'm a reasonable man. I'll make you a deal. You use your license the way you wish as provided by law and let me use my license the way I want as provided by that same law and I'll let the big bucks walk as I always have.

Why is it a stupid thread? Actually he's telling it how it is. Does it bother you? Not everybody hunts for "meat in the freezer". If I want meat in the freezer, I head to costco. It's actually better meat (and in the end, cheaper) . Let the young ones with potential walk, and maybe in another 2-3 years, it will be something I would want to take. My choice. A good hunting experience for me doesn't mean filling my freezer. I rarely do that anymore actually. I like something I can put on the wall, admire it for the rest of my life. The sausage meat is just a bonus.
Whatever floats your boat, people hunt for different reasons.

Exactly how I feel.I have alot of tree ornaments that resemble tags.Just because I bought one doesnt mean I have to fill it no matter what.I just enjoy getting out there and if I harvest a great buck that is just a bonus.

when I lived on the farm north of Nojack I was sitting on my couch and a big heavy beamed 5x6 wt buck walked up to the calf feeder
down by the barn I grabbed my rifle and opened the window used my couch as a rest 320 yard shot
one dead buck,
so yes you can kill a buck from the couch of yer living room if the its in season and conditions are right LMAO

You can’t shoot big bucks if you shoot little bucks because you no longer have a tag. Whether or not that’s your priority is ones own prerogative. Shoot what makes you happy.

You are welcome to.hunt antlers with your tag. I don't give a rip.. I can't eat antlers and I prefer deer/ Elk /moose to beef so I'll continue to hunt whatever legal buck I so choose. To tell the truth I'd rather let the big bucks walk. I like watching them in life .to me it's not much of a trophy. But whatever floats your boat as they say.....It's still a stupid thread cause his logic is flawed from every angle.

There are a lot of people pressed for time or don’t have the financial resources to take multiple trips, scouting, etc. Some only have 1 day to hunt. In the end, take what you want or able to.
