It is illegal to let a dog chase big game.

True but weather it's illegal or not people should have control of their dogs. Privately owned land or public. Guard dog, pet dog or whatever does no good at your house if it's at mine or running around unattended.

This isn't directed at you dmc.

My point is if you're hunting on crown that borders private land and you see and a dog that chased off a deer and you shoot that dog I would feel nothing if that farmer sent a round at you.

Also

Officer: why did you shoot that dog?
AO: It chased a deer away that I wanted to shoot
Officer: here have some fines and a court date no doubt

Later on AO someone posts a news article about a hunter shooting a farmers dog

AO en masse: omgzzzzz dats not a reeeaaaaalll hunterrrrrr how dare they make us all look bad!!

Officer: 'you shot that person..?

Play soccer: 'I was defending my pet '

........ wonder how that conversation ends....

Your buddies at PETA might set up a gofundme page.

Your not endearing yourself to anyone here....

The fact that 'you would feel nothing' is quite frankly scary...

And gives all kinds of anti hunter groups ammo to slag us.

So thanks man...... good job

As a responsible pet owner, my dog is never left unattended outside, I have a moral obligation to provide a safe home, and when we are outdoors make sure that she does not chase livestock, etc. She is curious by nature, as most dogs are. We do hunt squirrels together though.

I live in the country, surrounded by farmers, and I can tell you that dogs that run, wild or with other dogs do get shot, or shot at (not by me). It has never happened to mine, as I would never have, or will put them in that situation. My neighbour came to me one day in a real alarm, as his dogs had come home after a jaunt around the country side, one was was injured quite bad, a female mixed breed large dog. It was first thought by the neighbour that she was attacked by a cougar, as they have frequented that area before. I circled my property as-well as his, could find no cougar tracks leading to or away in the snow, etc.

When he returned from the vet, he had said that his dog had been shot with a rifle, she survived. I had previously told my neighbour in the past that I had seen their dogs roaming around on several occasions. I have never seen them chasing wildlife or stock though. Please ensure your dogs are safe and looked after, I would never wish anyones dogs to end up like my neighbours did. Pets should never have to suffer for irresponsible owners actions, or lack of, for that matter. Dont let your dogs chase game animlas, or domestic animals !!

Last season I had 2 dogs come through my blind area on private land. The dogs covered a lot of land chasing anything they found. They even went to the neighbors chicken coop. Funny after that day I don't think I saw one animal on the property and almost no signs of tracks for the rest of the season.

None of the farmers or ranchers I know would let their dogs roam out of control. And they are some of the first to take action, whatever that may be, when a canine is out chasing or out of control. Don't make this a hunters VS. ranchers thing, because it's not.

Most of the ranchers I know never tie there dogs up. In fact they have multiple dogs just for chasing animals off.
Only the working dogs are kenneled.
When I hunt on there place I useally have a "friend" tag along.... He licks my face and keeps me warm.
If anyone who he let hunt on his place shot one of his dogs or one of his nabours dogs, to say he would be mad would be the least of your worries.
