Default Earliest migration every

Last week I saw a good sized group of sandhill cranes west of Hardisty. Can’t remember ever seeing them that early before.

A couple of possibilities:

i) they might be last year's young. As such, they would not have bred this year and may have wandered around a bit over the summer, and could be migrating early.

ii) birds whose nests failed often start heading South a bit early.

I don't think those numbers are all that bad considering how dry it is. I would assume this years poor hatch accounts for a 10% drop in numbers

Pelicans at Innis lake, bunch of unusual red colored ducks around the the corner, starlings flocking up, makes you think.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the smoke?

I saw 4 flocks of Canada's heading south last night while walking the dog. About 25 - 30 birds per flock. Just over a week till opening day here!

I’m just back from the bush north of Wabasca and noticed several beaver lodges with fresh feed piles being stocked. Lots of flocks of geese in the fields on the way home too. Could be an early winter this year.

Default Earliest migration.

A lot of what happens in nature happens according to the amount of available light during a given period of time, eg. deer rut. I think it is referred to photo sensitivity. Maybe with all the fires and smoke this summer, it has something to do with that? Seems like the heavy smoke makes it look like it is getting darker somewhat earlier in the day.

Fella posted yesterday that all the birds had vacated Cambridge Bay on the Artic circle throughout the morning. Said the sky was black with southbound birds.
