Default Need expert(yours) advise!

Buddy has a bday coming in June and his wife wants to get him a present that his two sons can also enjoy and me as his best friend too… he wants to go fishing! So here is a problem- we want to get a boat and a guide who can take 4 guys out for a day or 2. We do want to be able to keep the fish, so Cold Lake is no go, lol!
My first thought was to fly to BC to Tofino or Comox and charter the boat. But we only have Friday to Monday time slot in august long weekend during the heritage days… driving will take too much time, flying is possible but still time consuming.
Another possibility is Saskatchewan. Anybody knows any good place where we can stay and get what we want?
Or a good place in BC where we don’t have to sell the kidney
Please throw me some ideas boys.
PS. The choice of fish is salmon, trout, walleye. Not interested in pike.

Thumbs up

Bakers Narrows Lodge, book Mac, he will bust his butt to get you on the fish of a lifetime etc and the staff will assist you by pointing out areas that you can venture to on your own and simply catch big trophy size fish or a bunch for a shore lunch/supper.

Drive to, turn key, simply awesome accommodations, staff and fishing.

My advise would be hit the Fraser and book a couple boats and slay some white sturgeon..... Two days is usually enough to wear everyone out and soon this experience I am sure will be gone. Everyone should experience these dinosaurs and the beauty of the Fraser.

Sorry gents, of course it is catch and release, did not intend to have the verb taken literally. I will do better.

Halibut is out of question- buddy is easily hit with sea sickness and afraid of going into the open ocean with swells.. yeah I know, I know, he is one of those gentle souls, lol!

Again in fine form on AO, it is no wonder this place is dying a slow death.

The Fraser River and surrounding areas in Zone 2 hold many species of fish, some which depending on time of the year can be retained.

Good luck, hope you and your buddies figure something out.

you could do a local river run for lake sturgeon with lunkers . His prices listed on the website seem reasonable and price breaks for having additional people on the boat.

Direct flight to comox is less than $300 return and less than 2 hours.
Lots of charters in comox....I'd recommend island pursuit sport fishing. He's under $1000/day for a full 8-9 hour day and he will put you on the fish. He also usually drops some prawn traps on the way out and pick up on the way back. Fish are cleaned and ready for flash freeze which they do right at the harbor.

That’s pretty cool too! I might just do it by myself! It would be an awesome experience if I catch the sturgeon.

Well I guess since he has to travel 6/7 hours from home? Prices on his home waterbodies are probably much less. Why wouldn't you use someone who is very familiar with Cold Lake and already set up there?

Looking good!
We are going to book him too, I’m just waiting for all the guys to confirm the days off at work and we are ready to roll!
If you don’t mind me asking- did you fly there or drove? We are going to fly WestJet direct, and what worries me is how we are going to transport the fish… We won’t have time to flash freeze it, only to clean and vac seal. So do we bring coolers from home? Do we fill them with ice and check them in at the airport? I don’t want for fish to go bad…

We drove that trip (I have family in comox).
I'd just buy a Styrofoam cooler down there....they have dry ice at the Harbour I believe. Flash freeze only takes a couple hours though. You can check the cooler of fish at the airport just make sure it's sealed up well and taped.

If you're comfortable with renting a boat at pedder bay marina or oak bay marina on south vancouver island for around 35 dollars per hours. Manual downrigger can be rented for 10 dollars. The boats include a depth finder.

its super inexpensive and fun to do. Ofcourse this would make you the guide plus you have to operate your own downrigger. No VIP treatment with fillet/vac seal and flash freezing though.

you guys would take turns reeling fish and driving the boat. boat can fit 4 guys but 3 guys comfortably.

I do this alot. If you're not sure where to go. I just follow the other guide boats LOL

My Dad and Chris our guide.
These two turned into buddies as my father let him in on some intel from back in the 70’s and 80’s and like a great guide he took it all in.

There is options for good lakers and rainbows in Northern B.C. . Lakers can reach over 30lbs(biggest I know of was rumored to be 50+) and the one lake rainbows can reach 15lbs but lots of lakes with rainbows to 5lbs. Lakers between 5-10lbs are common and so are 2lbs + rainbows

I have done all my fishing DIY when I lived in the area but I know a few of the lakes did have lodge’s just didn’t use them. I could ask my brother who still lives in the area if he knows any details on the lodge’s

Really I would be willing to help out with fishing info if you just wanted to go with a cabin/boat rental

Thanks Smoky, that’s pretty good info but none of us know how to run the boat, lol! I think we narrowed it down to the BC Comox outfitter that 58thecat recommended. But I will definetly keep your offer of information and help in mind for the future travels. Thanks again pal!
