I was about 2 hours from Southhampton that day but being only about 16 months old had no idea what was happening or where my father (Canadian Army Lord Strathcona regiment) was at the time. Later after moving to Canada he never did talk much about the war but I have a copy of dispatches citing his service record. RIP to him and all service personnel.

While some of today's society don't want to recognize anything related to war, I am grateful for the sacrifices our soldiers made.

An uncle (Mom’s brother) landed June 6 and made it until Sept 6 when he died of wounds suffered a couple of days prior. He was a Sgt. In a mortar crew. I still have some of the letters he wrote to Mom, the last of which was penned just a couple of days before he was wounded. One of his buddies wrote in a letter that Ora “went places the Devil was afraid to go”! Interestingly, the Company Padre wrote that he rested comfortably for a couple of days before his death, but his buddy said he never regained consciousness.
My father also embarked on Juno … but not until Aug 3rd. He served in a bridge building outfit and received only a relatively minor leg wound. My father remained friends with some of the guys he served with but they talked very little about “the war”.

I’m 51 years old, but there is no way I can fathom storming the beach, makes me so sad and angry all at once!!
I have no words other than to remove my hat, salute, and remember the fallen who gave their lives for ours.

Here is a pic of him at 90 years old on remembrance day 2010, I know I will never forget and I am eternally grateful for the sacrifices made for us.

My grandfather jumped into Normandy with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. Grew up with stories of "grandad" jumping in the war. It was the reason I joined the Army at 17 yrs old. Told the recruiter I wanted to jump out of airplanes and eventually ended up in 3 Commando in the Canadian Airborne Regiment. Those men were a special breed back then and have my upmost respect. We owe them a lot.
