Busy opening day
Not having any rams "tied down" I just picked me a drainage and hiked on early early morn. Got turned around, and found myself hiking up the wrong ridge.
So, it was past noon before I finally settled down for some glassing. After a while two friendly fellows appeared who had been glassing a little ways deeper in. They spoke of three more hunters in there, who again saw two others. That made 8 of us in the same basin. A tad crowded.
A borderline ram was seen apparently but he moved to safer places.
Bumped into the three hunters on the way out.
Maybe the closure of the south country is putting some pressure on K-country. One truck in the parking lot was from Pincher Creek.
All in all, not a very productive day, but it was great ot be out. Do you also find that the mountains are just a little less steep after the season starts?

Sorry to hear about the unsuccessful day. I guess it is always good to just get out.
I thought that the south country had been re-opened?

We actually ran into two other hunters in the basin we hiked into for three days. It's the first time I've come across a hunter in there in 6 years but they turned out to be a couple first-class guys and the younger of the two took a nice 35" ram on the evening of opening day. He'd been hiking hard for the past three years and really doing his homework so it was nice to see his hard work pay off. Saw lots of elk including several 6x6s and loads of sheep but only the one legal ram. Heard of a book ram being taken opening day as well as a couple other good rams so it was definitely one of the most successful opening days in K-Country that I can remember for a lot of years.

Glad to see you got some pics Mike! Heard a rumour about a couple legal rams in another basin so taking off at 3:00am tomorrow for one last kick down here before I head to the Willmore. Sounds like lots went down opening day but hopefully there are a few left. Hope to run into you again soon one day and stop by anytime.

Sheephunter, I'm not a huge fan of "creative" taxidermy and am more conservative by nature, but that mount looks fantastic. I would absolutely love a couple of different angle shots in higher res of that work if you would be willing to email me a couple.
If a guy had the floorspace, that would look super on a pedestal. Nice!

Send me your e-mail addy chuck and I'll shoot a few pics when I get back from the Willmore. I've already got a few conventional sheep mounts and wanted something really different with this mount and I think Jim did a perfect job. It likely would look good as a pedestal for sure. I'm not sure who makes the form but it is commercially available. If you want to talk creative taxidermy, Boland did a life-size cougar for me that sits on a diarama on top of a pedastal. Now that looks really cool.
