WMU 523 Calf Moose?
I was able to get a couple of Calf Moose tags for Myself and my first time shooting, 13 year old son in WMU 523.
I've never been much further than Little Smokey on Hwy 43. Checked the area with Google Earth and I was pretty shocked, disappointed also, that there's not much in the way of bush or crown land around the area. I have a few questions that hopefully somebody can educate me on.
First of all, Why Calf moose tags? I understand the winter death rate, but why allowing Calf hunting in this particular area?
Secondly, What parts of the zone would be best for Calf Moose? Due to snagging the Calf tags, I also went for the Mulie tags. Where would be ideal for both?
Lastly, where or what parts of the zone would I be able to find some crown land to rough it out for a three day hunt? It's a five hour drive from here, motels are not my cup of tea either if I can help it. Now I don't want to shoot myself and say I WANT CROWN LAND if that's not where the Moose are. If hunting will require asking farmers permission. Would there be much opposition to hunters or are the moose a nuisance much like the Elk on 338 by highway 16?
