Default feral wild boar

Have any of you tried hunting wild boar?
Where have you hunted them?
Do you use a tree stand?
Did you bait them?
What sort of firearm did you use?

Several people have told me that any .30 is sufficient, but, I was thinking about using 12 gauge slugs and 00 buckshot.

Well the caliber of firearm you use really depends on where exactly you found and are planning on hunting the wild boars.

We found a pack of 5 while quadding west of Edmonton. A mother with 4 little ones. Went and baited the area but they roam huge distances that I was unable to catch anything on camera coming to the bait site. Lots of signs though, lots of rooting going on in the wetter parts/ muskeg. I was planning on using my 30-06. My uncle last year shot one behind the ear with a 7mm Rem Mag and put it down. This was near Clyde, on private land so no idea where they go. I hope and don't hope the population explodes like it did in Texas and Louisiana.

In regards to your question, hogs are somewhat "blind" but have a very good sense of smell ( hence why they are used for truffles) and their hearing is fairly good. So unless you are over a bait stand and can get them within 50 yards, a shotgun may not be the best option.

I leave to Texas tomorrow so I may get a hog hunt in while I am there for a week.

Never seen one in Alberta. Know that doesn’t help, but just curious, what would be the reason to embed buckshot into a pig. I’ve taken a couple Black bears with slugs, but your talkin buckshot and pigs.

I have eaten a couple that came out of the Jack Pine grazing reserve 25 years ago. They were young pigs and very good eating.

Default Boar

Have hunted them around standard and Brooks, 308 partition always worked, not a lot of damage to meat no matter what size

A lot of websites claim this. Here is an example "Hogs do not have particularly acute eyesight, so ground blind construction needn't be elaborate. In fact, I rarely use one at all. "

It's one of their weaknesses.

ive shot about 50 of them, and about half of those were wth a 223 or a 220 Swift. Hit them behind the ear and it's DRT, or right tight to the shoulder and double lung them and they don't go far. If you use a 30-06 and hit more than 4-5" behind the shoulder on a boar over 100 lbs, and you probably won't find it.

The pigs I've hunted have been more sppoky than the white tails in the same area when near a feeder or out in the open fields. They get pretty comfortable and can be stalked once in the brush.

Friend of mine shot one in Texas a few weeks ago while we were deer hunting down there. He used my 6.5X47 with a 130 gr AccuBond. Worked great.

They certainly see me before I ever see them

Wonder if you know my hunting buddy from there. He shot quite a few one day can't remember how many but he said never again. Lol.

I've stalked feral pigs, not the Russian ones and they're quite easy to get within bow range of. They do indeed seem to have "poor" eyesight or at least they don't depend on it much. Once they scent you it's game over.

A friend tagged a Mom and small offspring of his grandparents farm. He got the word they were out feeding. He set up game cams and bait. Never seen them for a long time or got any pics, they move worse than elk and at night. 2 sighting in 6 months.

Months later they were spotted again and we went out the next day. He waited near the bush edge before sundown. That's when two families of pigs came out. He got the mom and a piglet off one group.

Surprisingly solid and heavy animals for their size to pack out. SOOO yummy.

4 yrs ago, farms been sold, new owners say no so can't help with location or access other than Sangudo to Barrhead area Have to put on the km's if you want one, spot them and ask for permission.

Ahh the infamous and mythical Alberta wild boar. Very expensive to hunt from the bit of information I've come across so far. Would really like to pinwheel one with my bow. One can dream!
