Default Buddy reviving a Win 88 .308, advice?

My best bud is getting back to shooting. He is reviving an inherited Win 88 rifle. It has been stored for quite awhile but is not rusty. The action is stiff but I'm convinced it is congealed lubricant.

The rifle, not carbine, is iron sighted and will stay that way initially at least. He is considering having a smith do a clean and inspect. We are looking for anecdotes and real shooter experiences, tips, tricks, cautions, etc..

Thanks, Bob

Sorry, forgot to ask about any collector value if he decides to modify?

An awesome rifle, I just did a resto on my grandfathers old 88, serial number puts the date of manufacture at 1958. Using the Youtube videos I stripped it down and cleaned up the action. Then stripped the stock, re-cut the checkering and re-finished. I also reblued it. I must say I am very happy with the results. Took it out ot the range shortly after finishing the work and she still shoots beautifully. If your friend has any questions feel free to PM me.

Excellent lever action that will shoot pointed bullets. Quite accurate, will do MOA or better, if properly bedded. Unless there is something special about the gun they have little to no collector value unless they are in pristine shape with high grade wood and even then they don't sell for big money.

They are however a great hunting rifle and well worth keeping in very good shape. A quality re-blue by a good gunsmith is not all that expensive and refinishing the stock is pretty simple do it yourself project. Top it off with a good scope and you have a wonderful hunting gun.

The 358 and the 284 are desirable and fairly pricey, if you can find them.

They sure are.
YouTube helped me out with the disassembly and reassembly.
I used Jim Greens Downeast gunworks on my dad’s 88 which he passed down to me.

Super hunting rifles but little or no collector value in 308 Win. Almost certainly needs a really thorough cleaning of both bore and action. Go for it!
