Default What Vanes are you using

I was sitting in the basement fletching up some FMJs tonight, and was thinking about all the different vanes I have tried over the years and figured I would see what everyone is using just for discussion sake. I have used the good old 5", 4" from years ago, then I got into using 3" Fusions which I really liked but can't find them around anymore, then onto the 2" Blazers with the normal offset and with a right Helical which I'm using now, and Ive just started playing with AAE Max Hunters.
For 3D I have used Mini Blazers, Fusions, Reg Blazers, AAE Pro, and prob a couple others.
Whats your fav fletch to use?

Tried the AAE Max Hunters and they were garbage .... Well they worked fine when you got them to stick but that was a near impossible task. I also found they weren't as durable as blazers.
I'm now back to tried and true blazers in a right helical.

Default vanes

I use Blazer vanes for hunting and Norway 3-D vanes (1.8" & 2.3") for 3-D

Blazers for hunting - good control not to heavy. Max Hunters for my fat target shafts - run ultra stiff Series 22's need as much control as possible, Max pro for long range small shafts - run at perfect spine, higher FOC need less control on the tail end.

All fletched with an EZ fletch with helical

Best luck I've had with glues is the one from AAE.

2" NAP Quikspins, much like the Blazer but they have a ridge on the edge of the vane that makes them spin quicker...hence the name. You lose maybe a couple fps, but they stabilize right quick and steer very good. Use them exclusively for 5 years now.

J.

I used fobs when they first were being developed a some 10 years ago or so. I talked a lot with Paul and did a lot of testing on the first generation Fob. They are an incredible piece of technology as far as arrow stabilization goes, I was shooting some very large fixed blade broadheads in excess of 300 fps with astounding accuracy out to 60 yards and beyond. But if you shoot 3d they get destroyed by your competitors in a hurry! As well, it makes it tough to shoot groups without destroying them. Finally, they are un-forgiving and will not correct arrow flight if you happen to brush up against something in flight, such as a piece of grass or hanging twig, whereas a conventional feather or vane will. This I know from experience! I stopped using them for this reason, but if I was only going antelope hunting or hunting anything in open country I would not hesitate to use them for a second! I still have a supply and shoot them every now and then!

Cool looking but might be a little hard to shoot out of my WB.

Default Helicals?

I can see the immediate benefit of the helical, I mean to get the spin right. Iv gotta pick up a couple more arrows due to missed shots. Im shooting a wb and 2" blazers right now. As a lefty does it matter with helicals?? I havnt played much with different things with my bow. I know I started off with 4" veins and quickly found out I didnt like them lol

I wouldnt shoot a helical vane set up out of a wb. Rest. It will cause you all kinds of tuning problems.

5" Shrinkwraps. Love 'em. Most durable vane combo for a WB I've tried yet.

Bought a new set of arrows last year, went with Blazers. A week later I peeled them all off, boiled up water, and did them all in Shrinkwraps. I personally love them.

Im not really sure but i have been told. Read. And watched videos and everyone says that you shouldnt be shooting helical vane set ups through wb. Rests.

i would think its because of how much more spin and vane friction there is from the vanes being helical.

Using 4" Duravane Savage...for a couple reasons
One... is more stability in high winds...which Alberta is not shy of...
Two...Very durable vane designed for Ugly Cookie [WB] that holds up for thousands of shots...

Blazers would be second choice...

Offset as much as vane and arrow have full contact...
Glue pending on shaft and brand...

Mike its not so much tuning issues...its more vane and WB wear ...because of the helical the WB and Helical Vane beat the crap out of each other due to extreme twist in helical...Offset works best...

Interesting Fact...

In another post someone had mentioned that the ASAT leafy suit glowed under UV light...In dawned on me that the leafy suit was probably the only camo gear I never tested under the UV light...so last night after the stand I turned off the lights in the shop and got out the UV light...Passed with flying colors..

But I was shocked at many of the arrows I had in arrow holders near me...The Blazers in FLO colors were as bright as a small flashlight...espessially the orange and yellows...worst was one that was orange yellow with an Bohning Flo orange tiger stripe wrap....glowed like a torch!!!

so if your UV Consciousness.........

My arrows were blacked right out...solid black and white vanes and even the white was blacked out...

Neil
