Default Archery moose in WMU 936 (post rut ideas)

Hey Guys
I've got an antlered moose draw in 936. The season runs Oct 17th-31sr Bow only and then rifle. I'd love to get my first game animal with a bow this fall (gotten many others with a rifle ). Any thoughts whether I should just cover a ton of ground or if I should try calling this late?

Calling will be hit or miss.

covering ground is a waste of time in my opinion. You're better off to sit in a tree stand ... are you comfortable with that? Cause I know the perfect spot.

The north east corner section is a great place to start. If you cant find at least one moose a day up in there, its very odd. I dont know about a stand in there. There are alot of trails they use daily. But have always been one to be aggressive and go after them. Lots of water up in the NE section of the park... and u will find moose around it.

As for calling... i wouldnt bother unless you have an elk tag and hit the second elk rut that the elk have in the park.

The second rut for elk according to my watch has likely started already!

Doesn't the 936 elk season start really late in there?

I know everything but the NE corner very well. I've been in there lots over the last few years. I've got an area that has been hot with fresh tracks and a few moose sightings over the last few weeks but can't seem to find the bulls. At this time I don't have a tree stand but I'd be more then comfortable just sitting in the bush. Thanks for the help guys! Why do you think covering ground would be a waste of time?

936 is different than your watch. For some reason most things are oddball in there. At least in years past. Im not energetic to haul a moose out of that place anymore. But timesink... if u get a doozey... pm me for my number as most likely ill be in a tree stand or ground blind in strathcona not very far away if u need help. I keep my Badlands OX pack frame with me during hunt days.

Dont u have an elk draw timesink ?

So when does the "second rut" kick in out there? 936 can't have completely different biology than the surrounding areas with a similar photoperiod?? Can it?

Usually starts in a few days from now and is short... years past there has been a third near end of draw season

Your clock is on time...for here anyway..it has indeed started. may be almost over..Elk are in bigger herds...and this is slow for here... the 5-12 Oct being peak here
the last three years prior to this year I took my bulls on Oct 5th -9th and 12th all in full second rut...

I agree on your area Neil mine was taken in the 12th of Oct too....full on rut mode came in on a string from 1/4 mile through a wide open field.

It is simple to calculate the second rut as it is 28 days or so after the first rut....determining the initial "peak rut" is the hard part but it is usually around the 15th-25th of September this year I would say peak rut was somewhere around the 22nd.

The second rut can be very productive as herds are larger and more satellite bulls are running around very eager to check out a lone cow call.

Would say its all but done 2nd rut also..however bulls will still bugle...
there is also a little known "third" rut where yearling cows will come into a phase that gives off scent.......... but they dont actually breed!!

I have seen the third go all the way into mid November!!!

Thing is elk are vocal and communitive critters, one can talk to them almost all year long...was picking up trail cams this weekend and heard a bull so I used a cow cow for feces and giggles and called a cow in to five yards....

so keep callin

Neil

A few things about that area.

Generally how long a walk does it take you to get where you want to go?
Animals in the area, are they used to seeing humans? The reason for this question because it is a park right and people use it all the time for recreation.
How much time do you get to hunt? Specific days or weeks to fill your tag?
Any restrictions?

I was thinking about maybe putting in for a draw but I would have to scout areas early before the season starts. Which is the better opportunity Elk or Moose?

Thanks in advance

Moose have that same 1st and second rut..as well as the little known third rut...which can go into November also...

Some of the biggest herds of moose...yup herds from 8-12 moose all in the same area..were in November...

likely triggered by that third rut.....and bulls can be called during that time...

I dont think you will have a problem calling right to the end of oct...

With snow on ground..I like to find fresher tracks...and hound dog the tracks until I found the moose...[there are ways to know if it is a bull or cow]if un-pressured they usually dont travel all that far...

The big game seasons are typically shorter than most. The regs have all of those listed. There is no Sunday hunting.

You need to be prepared to walk/bike a fair bit, especially if you want to get away from the majority of the other park visitors. Then you will need to retrieve your animal...

You need to attend an orientation session every five years, and acquire a discharge permit every year. These are free of charge. The sessions are an excellent opportunity to find out about the opportunities in the park.

I like to head in there for birds, it gives me an opportunity to keep an eye out for where the bigger critters are.

Can't comment as to which animal offers the best opportunity as I am usually after moose.

I have been out twice but no moose sightings yet. I did see a 40inch+ bull last week prior to the season but haven't been able to find him since. It's been way to warm!
