Default Ice Thickness Reports

Ice is off Lake Sundance later this year. Started melting quick on Sunday. Yesterday half the lake was ice free. Today the ice should be all gone.

How is the ice doing outside of Calgary?

Walking on south Chain Lake is likely a life threatening move. On a cold year ice in Calgary can be as much as 40 inches thick. This year the ice was 20 inches. Ice conditions are likely unpredictable.

Still a good 3' on lakeland area lakes. Snow on top of the ice isn't even melted yet. Could make for a very interesting opening day here in 3 weeks.

This is kind of an amateur question but my Dad wants me to come out with the kids icefishing on Sardine Lake west of Edmonton this weekend and since we will have a few hot days before then, how much could that change the ice thickness? I saw the report above of 21" on the 22nd but don't want to take chances with the kids. Thanks in advance!

Ice thickness means nothing when it's the consistency of a slurpee. I wouldn't be bringing my child or myself on the ice anywhere right now, especially after a few very warm, sunny days.

Welcome to the forum . Secondly even if the ice looks ok Id stay away , you don't want to be that group of people reported on the 6:00 news or the 3 rd page of the news paper that RCMP and Divers searching for missing family presumed dead . Wait a few weeks , im sure theres some area trout ponds darn near free of ice or even enough to chuck a line out from shore . I think those might be better options for the safety of yourself and your family . Just thinking out loud .

Don't, take them swimming in a heated pool, looking pretty crappy out there.

Default Lake Sundance ice free April 24th

Interestingly enough about the exact same time as last year.

Ice is totally off Lake Sundance in Calgary, March 31, 2015

Pretty early relatively speaking. The heavy rain we had last weekend sure did a number on it.

Drove out to the nsr today by Lindbergh and it's still iced over. Flowing on the edges so it won't be long now.

Lake Sundance is freezing fast. From zero to half froze over in one night. Could be a bit early this year.
