Marking sinking fly lines.
I often troll full-sink lines on stillwaters. Depending on speed, depth, and where the fish are in the water column, I vary the amount of line I have out considerably. Often, I'd like to replicate the amount of line I had out when I had a strike, or took a good fish. I don't know of a fly rod with an integral 'line-counter' !, so I've experimented with marking 10 ft intervals by tying on knots of braided line, bits of tape and marking with sharpies on the fly line, with poor results.
Has anyone found a good method of 'depth' marking sinking lines?

Does it harm anything to leave them semi-permanently on your line ?
Do they run through your rod guides easily ?

I notice that the 'slip bobber stops' you've recommended come in different sizes. - presumably for different monofilament lines. Whish size (s/m/l/xl) would you recommend for a standard 6wt, sinking fly line ?

The nearest Fishing Hole is 1 1/2 hours away and I wasn't planning on doing a run into Calgary anytime soon. Ordering through Amazon usually has items here in just a few days... thx.

flyrod troller eh? Ive used every combination of lead core, clear intermediate and floating lines.
If you just need like 50' then 15' marks use white out.One is fifty two is 65' etc.
Easy to apply and wares off after a trip or two.

I also use white out to mark full sink lines for marking 2' off bottom when anchored.Easy to return after ea fish.

There was a similar discussion on another website that I was recently and a number of guys used the white grease markers they use for marking tires.
I followed this YouTube video and added markers to my two sinking lines. Coat with UV epoxy or Sally Hansen's clear nail polish for more Durability. I also saw a suggestion for following the technique in the video but using waxed dental floss. No need to even coat it.

If you are trolling a fly line then it is probably straight out from the back of the boat/tube/whatever. You would have to add some serious weight to your leader to get it to go down at all.

Thats why we use type 6-7 sinking lines or lead core.We also troll super slow to get lines down.

Have you thought about small pieces of coloured heat shrink tubing.....cut lengths up into small sleeves, slide em on the line to your preferred location and give them a quick blast with a heat gun or hair dryer. They should shrink to grip tight and will go through your guides very easily.
I have not done it but use the stuff all of the time on auto wiring, binding up the cut end of rope etc... And you can easily cut them off if you want to remove.

A variety of diameters are available
