I was on a lion hunt a long time ago. It was my second safari tryng to get a lion and while my PH was a legend, it was still a 40% chance, at best, of getting a shot in the 14 days.
We were talking to the land owner and he was telling us of the previous hunt. The client was a minister of some kind and old Man Dupessis recalled how the two of them would kneel down and pray that he would get his lion. ( I have my own thoughts about such a deal, but it really does not matter)
They shot 4 or 5 zebras and a similar number of blue wildebeests for bait over the course of the safari trying to bait the cats.
And then one day they came over a little hill and 60 yards below was a pride with a big male.
The PH shouted that the wind was wrong and that the client must not shoot!
My PH went nuts on the news! 60 yards - you shoot!
Obviously, the PH was scared of lions and the minister never did get another chance.
I reckon he had something in common with the bear guide in Alaska.
Pity.
