Default Camp Wainwright Sharptail

Has anyone heard anything official, as to whether the hunt on the base will happen this year? I am hearing rumors , but nothing official at this point.

I have emailed and left a voicemail with the Base's Public affairs officer and have not heard anything back. AEP also seems unsure...

Hi All. Per the Friends of Prairie Vista hunting dog club Facebook page looks like some members have confirmed the grouse hunt is still a go. It is subject to change but as of right now still planned.

It’s a go and in the regs.

Masks mandatory in all buildings.

Great news, thank you. I did see mention of it in the regs, but the way things have gone this year with covid, I wanted to make sure that it was still a go.

Are you allowed to bring your dog to the hunt.

Absolutely, most of us wouldn't bother if we couldn't take our dogs.

Default Wainwright registration?

Where do you register for the wainwright hunt? Is there a main gate you have to check in with?

Yes. In years past, you drive into the main gate to let them know why your there. You’ll be directed to follow the signs to the staging area where everyone registers and are giving the orientation before heading out for the day. No pre-registration in advance.

Got an email back from the base. It is indeed a go. Masks required in building with 6' distance etc. Will be ran in the same format as years past.

Nope. In fact, never fired a shot. Saw lots of birds, but they were flushing wild.

Never seen them so wild on the base, five flushes, not one shot opportunity. Plenty of shots fired though, other people are having much better luck. Annex is open.

Better day today, birds down in four minutes. Birds were still wary, but at least we did some shooting, and took birds. Around 200 birds taken during Friday and Saturday.

Default wainrite sharpies

Had a good time. It's great to see the dogs so hyper, for their first real hunt of the year.
Some areas we struck out, but mostly saw at least one or more in all the areas we combed.
Took a limit on Saturday morning, and Sunday was way tougher with the heat. By then, the dogs were really feeling it. managed three more, but we really had to work for it. Most of the flushes Sunday were typical sharptail; Always on the other side of the tree, and only shadows through the branches. Of the three taken, they were all in low silver willow patches with better visibility.
Always a great hunt opportunity. Lots of different country to cover and things to see. We wrapped up our hunt, and just as we hit a main road, a nice 6x6 bull elk and cow ran out in front of us to cross the road. Fully hard horned with no scraps of velvet. Game on!!

Orientation is every day, you check in and out of the camp every day. When you enter the main gate, there are signs directing you to the orientation building, which is a long ways from the gate.

So only one orientation each day at 7 am for the hunts. Is that correct?

there will be signs on the base to direct you to the building for the range briefing. just need to get to the base by following 1st street over the overpass to the base and proceed through the main gate for the base
