This time of the year is chironomids first, then pheasant tails. damsels and dragons.
If one of those aren't working I try mini leeches, depending on the lake I might try some whitish 2" or so minnow type patterns, or some bigger leech patterns.

Before the chironomids start hatching my go to is a Doc Spratley, black or green on a wet line.

Balanced leeches have been good to me at all times of the year, pheasant tails too.

Phil Rowley's size 14 Baby Damsel or M&M leech tied on a jig hook/slotted bead. Fished with an indicator. Works for perch and whitefish too.

Bruised balanced leech. It already caught an 8 to 9lb 'bow on a lake to be unnamed 5 days ago!

I'm a big fan of the balanced leech at this time of year too, I think the fish find a big, easy meal "just sitting there" hard to resist when the water is cold.

Probably midges. Usually zebra midges. Buggers and bunny streamers are great too.

Leech patterns, Prince and pheasant tailed nymphs and my small assortment of chironomids that rarely seem to be the right size or color to match the hatches.
