Model 70 action barrel swap to sako factory barrel
Can any of you guys in the know tell me if you can put a factory sako 300wm barrel onto a Winchester model 70 338 rifle action with minimal machining? I’ve got both of these parts sitting in front of me the model 70 needs a barrel and the sako 300 wm barrel is surplus to my needs. Seems like an easy stop gap swap until I can get a 338 win barrel to fix it up.

You did not say which version of the model 70 but in general, that isn't going to work without quite a bit of machine work. You also didn't say wich Sako as some are metric and others are inch. Pull the barrel on the 70 and see if the Sako barrel will at least thread in. Most Winchester are 1x16 but the classics are different. I would take them to Henry, he will tell you in short order if it is doable. New barrels aren't that expensive. Call K.S Arms. Bet they can have one for you in 3 or 4 weeks.

99% will require machining, but the barrel is free. Give Henry Remple in Langdon a call, he is very reasonably priced.

The A7 should be a metric thread, the model 70 should be standard.

On my notes on the sako ,majority will be 1 inch x 16 tpi. I don’t have the notes on the A 7 but I would imagine it is the same . Win 70 is 1 x16tpi. . The shanks will not be the same length . At any rate the barrel can be fitted to the receiver

henry installed a model 70 pipe on a tikka t3 action for me minimum machine work threads are the same ,possably sako and tikka are the same ,,he mostly needed to shorten the shank and lengthen the chamber a small amount give him a call , if it needs a sleeve for the diff. thread pattern he has also done that operation for me

The Model 70 is a push feed so no coned breech or extractor cut required. The threads are the same at 1" x 16 TPI.
A7's have long thread shanks so it's a matter of shortening the thread and getting the stamping where you want it and cutting the chamber deeper to headspace.
