Default Bobber Confusion

Alright fishermen and fisherwomen I have a little question that I hope you all can answer. I was at my favourite lake for trout fishing with a bobber and having lots of takes where the bobber would be completely submerged under the water but i did not get one hookup. Do you all have any tips on what could be going wrong? Bobber too big? Too slow hook set? Thanks for any help in advance!!

Need more details. Average fish size, hook size, bait, how it's rigged ect. Ie: A whole crawler on a bait hook presented to an 8" trout isn't going to result in many hook ups.

Sorry about that! The average size fish is around 2-3 pounds and i was using a size 6 bait hook with a very minimal piece of worm on it with 2 small splitshot weights above the hook about a foot up.

what kind of bobber??

It would seem a small, just balanced buoyancy wise slip bobber may be the answer.

Honestly the fish could be bumping your line and/or biting your splitshot. I've had that happen many times when fly fishing (with a bobber and swivel etc). Maybe try going weightless and if you need a weight, use a tiny jig

I find that if you gently lift the rod first to take up slack it works best.

I lift the rod straight up in a slow steady motion and then once I feel the pressure I set the hook

Always use the smallest bobber you can. That will help in hooking up.

Keep hooks sticky sharp.

Works for me.

Sounds like the fish might be hitting your slipshot,
I have used rather too large bobbers on trout etc with success, maybe hook size needs to be smaller? You got to try a few things first to see why there is no hook up.

A size 6 sounds like too big of a hook for bait like worms/maggots. Try a 10 or better yet 12 with the bait hiding the hook.. for minnows an 8 or 10. As stated they might be aware of the hook and are just trying to pick the bait off of it.
