There was a guy at the Skeena doing it for steelhead. Would be kinda interesting fighting a strong fish just using the rod.

I don't think that is what you saw FG. Tenkara lines are tied directly to the rod tip; there is no extra line to let out (there are no line guides on the rod). Even the smallest steelhead is going to make at llisteria blistering run of 100-500 feet. I don't believe there is any way you could land one on Tenkara gear (unless you are running 30-50 flourocarbon tippet and steel downrigger wire main line).

I fish with a Ayu Tenkara on smaller streams and it's very fun to be able to "dab" dries in little pockets a regular fly rod would be next to impossible to fish.

Definitely wouldn't try catching a steelhead with it but have caught a sea run brown about 14" in Iceland which was pretty incredible.

It's a surprisingly versatile rod but takes time to readjust your casting if you are using to a regular fly rod. If you're ever down in Calgary, let me know and you're more than welcome to try it out on the Bow or Elbow. (just hope that you don't hook a 30" brown)

I think a lot of people from down east will recognize the equipment as being similar to the old bamboo pole technique for trout. When I first went to Newfoundland back in the 70's, I saw a lot of sporting goods and hardware stores with 14-18ft bamboo canes/poles propped up in bins by the door for sale. Over the years the number of stores selling these decreased and I wonder of any are being sold there now.
A braided line about the same length as the bamboo was tied to the top end then a short leader. Some used a float/bobber and worms and some used flies.
The action of the pole swung the bait or flies out.
There was no such thing as playing a fish, it was simply dragged in.
The only thing I see different is that down east, there was none of the fancy movements involved with Tenkara nor was it needed. I am not sure how much this method is used these days.
