I definitely won't bonk any more big lake trout, they just are not good eating. I guess it is a good way of sustaining them, only make the big tasteless ones open game.

Walleye on the other hand...

I have caught 1 in my life, eaten half of it, but I sure want more.

Yeah..lake trout are fun to catch but to me they taste like wet sawdust..

Brookies are pretty good but the best tasting fish (fresh water) has to be walleye with perch being a close second..

They get greasy too. That is why the old timers used to just throw them up on the bank for the wildlife to eat. They figured they killed the good tasting trout and were bad eating them selves. I have only ate one and it was very poor table fare. (alberta side bull).

Default To bonk or not to bonk......

So, those of you with a live well in your boat - do you use it?
Do you then bonk them just before cleaning? This is what I have been doing, but a friend of mine slits their throat and bleeds them (walleyes) if he is keeping them. He says the meat is nicer this way. If you do this do you put them on ice until you can fillet them?

when im in the boat i pull a gill and bleed them out with the livewell pump on. if im drinking i like to punch them in the face until they bleed ....i have issues though .. bleeding out is the best thing you can do for quality especially in salmon and hali's. if its fresh water i do the same thing but like to clean them and get them on ice sooner than later. bonkers are for sissies but those aluminum ones are pretty nice. would be good for those days when there isn't many old millwaukee down the hatch yet.

I usualy just whack em when I clean them. I suppose if your ice fishing or putting them on ice killing them would be a nice gesure but the whole point of a stringer is to keep the fish alive longer so they stay fresh longer. Not sure what the point would be of killing them before putting them on the stringer. I dont think beating them up in a livewell all day is much better and plenty of people do that.

besides I am pretty sure bonking fish is just as illegal as bonking any type of animal. unless you are from Edmonton
You surely must have meant "boinking" and not "bonking" being illegal. Just a bit of difference

Cal, I put the bonked fish on the stringer so I can immerse the fish back into the water, it's cooler than being on the ground in summer. When a bonked fish goes back into the water, it'll essentially drown while unconscious. Some fish will also struggle so hard that it'll rip their gill plates while on the stringer if left conscious.

Filleted and bbq'd a nice 13 lb bull from the shuswap, nice pink meat and extremely tasty, must say, it was one of the best fish ever. As for lake trout, went to a fish fry last summer, deep fried lake trout in batter, awesome tasting, hard to tell the diff between cod and the trout. Got to get the recipe for the batter.

Millions of fish are caught every year in nets.......none are bonked. If it makes you feel better bonk em, otherwise leave us non-bonkers alone.

I don't bonk, I break their necks with my hands. But that might just be a trout thing. I would bonk a walleye if I ever caught a legal one. I generally don't keep fish but when I do I break their necks and they die right away and then I put them on the stringer.

But when you are sitting on the ice, in a boat, or on a lawnchair at the dock, and have a fish swimming around in a bucket, when F&W comes along he can accuse you of culling. I just don't want to be in that position, ever. My limit on trout in a put and take lake here is 5, perch 10-15, I know that I can take 3 walleye and 1 lake trout out of Cold Lake that is over a certain length, so when I catch a keeper I kill it. Then there is no chance of getting written up for culling.

Well I guess there is, but the F&W officer would likely see the dead fish floating there if you throw it out and keep the next one.

I do it for that reason, and so it does not suffer.
