I dont keep fish but if I did I would opt for a one handed choke followed by a leg drop.

Quick stab in the brain, slice the gills and into ice slurry if possible. The Ike jime method, by far the best way to get the highest quality from the meat. I was lazy last year and didn't do it to a few fish and boy did they taste off.

never owned a fish bonker in my life.
Typically only kept fish in winter...and just did the classic toss to the side of the hole and go after another.

I have never noticed that, do you put them on ice, in water in a cooler, on the bottom of the boat.....

Thanks BBJ, never even thought of to notice.
I'm gonna experiment with my next few catches, bonk one and cut another to see for myself.

if you lined up a row of 20 perch you could easily put them all to sleep with one leg drop. Its just as classy

Dead fish
A much less atavistic method is to reach in behind the gills and crush the heart against the spine with your thumb. The fish bleeds out and dies quickly. Toss the unit into your live well full of ice (plug the inlet tube to prevent water infiltration) and enjoy your lunch.
A couple of years ago one of our members described a scene on her kitchen floor when a bonked northern pike leapt out of the sink and tried to escape across the linoleum. Freaked everybody out (especially "hubby")(funny name for a man), considering that the fish had been well and truly killed several hours earlier. This cannot happen if the fish has no pulse.

Bwahahahaa Hilarious!
For the veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery rare occassion I eat fish I catch (usually only for shore lunch or I know fishy will not survive release due to whatever), I'm a bonker. Don't actually own one though. If on shore, good ol big rock to the noggin' works just fine. If on ice or boat my long pliers work great too! May not be the best technique for meat quality but it's clean and I'm not one to let fishy slowly tap out, just seems wrong...FOR ME PERSONALLY anyway
Interesting question...more interesting answers lol.
Great looking bonkers Ken, could be a multi-tool

Now I know I need Glasses...
I thought it read boink your fish.
Was worried you guys in Alberta had been cooped up to long over the winter.
Now I am going for a drift on Saturday on the Cowichan river on Vancouver Island.
Be trying for Rainbows and Browns of which the later is on my bucket list, dont ask me why they just are.
Tight Lines,
Rob
ps, Yes I BONK my fish, enough for a feed is all I ask for.
