Prefernce for and against differnt brands of reels is all based on personal opinion. I wasn't stating that it was a fact that quantums sucked, I just personally didn't have the greatest experience with using them.

I spent $80 on my pfleuger which is a little high for my budget, but it was well worth it. I saw the same reel at brass pro for $50 and it casts and retrieves like a dream. So yeah I'd have to agree, price doesn't mean anything at all when it comes to a good brand.
PS for you guys arguing. I had a quantam before my pfleuger, and it was great. I mean it was the smoothest reel but it held up against abuse for years.

To add to that, I believe that any brand makes awesome reels. I personally am a fan of Pflugers and Daiwas though i know that even those two companys have made their bad reels too.
Again I should have thought about it more when saying that the quantums sucked. I have only used the bottom line ones.
The Daiwas and and Pflugers I have been using are all middle of the line reels.
BTW if I used a mid line or top of the line quantum, I'd probably be very impressed.

thats a fair statement....i wasnt trying to bash you.
I will say though there is a substantial difference between a 80 buck reel and a 200 buck reel in all makes.....does a fisherman like me need a 200 buck + reel?..... nah ...... but i appreciate the quality
p.s. the new top of line pfluger spinning reel is purdy nice

I think the best reel is whetever feels the most comfortable and doesn't pile up on you.
I have used Islander reels on the coast that cost an absolute fortune and I hate the feel of them. An old Shimano that I used to own over 20 years ago was the best reel I have ever used. It wasn't the most expensive,or had the most features but that thing held up to abuse;and I mean abuse. We fished a LOT of Walleye from shore. That reel would get dropped on the rocks, splattered with Muskol, pounded when stuck on bottom etc. I threw it out when I moved out west and have not found a reel yet that I like as much as that old Shimano.
Part of it is like using golf clubs too. Some guys can afford the best and they feel good and the owner appreciates the quality. Do they make that much difference;not for me and I have a $300 putter and miss most 6 foot puts with it LOL!)I would ask the guy at the counter to lay out a half dozen reels without you knowing the price and pick the one that feels the best to you.(And just hope it's not $400.00!!)

Money is no opject with me ,I have it and I will spend it .
What I like , I can only find in a cheep reel.
This is what I look for in a spin casting reel :
Must come with a spare spool. So I can change from heavy to a light line.
Must have a snap shot release trigger system on it.
Must be able to stop at the trigger when turning backwards , and not over turn.
Must have a rear drag system on the back of the reel , because if on the spool , you have more parts to loss when changing spools.
One day I willl find a high end reel to sit on top of my high end rod.
Went from a ugly stick to a st croix , big difference , I wonder if a high end reel will makes a difference ?
