I just carry different thickness of rubber bands and cut with pliers little chunks off... and apply to the barbless hook after bait has been rigger to keep it on. Works for me

Yes that works just as well. The only thing I don't like about using chunks of rubber band is that it looks un-attractive. The small black o-ring is hardly noticable.
